Report: Cost of HealthCare.Gov Approaching $1 Billion

Report: Cost of HealthCare.Gov Approaching $1 Billion | Upsetment | Scoop.it
GAO Report places cost overrun blame squarely on the shoulders of the federal government
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The real problem IMHO is that the government outsources such work instead of developing its own programming services. This is just another example of how outsourcing really is not a good answer in many situations.

The United States Has Outspent the Marshall Plan to Rebuild Afghanistan

The United States Has Outspent the Marshall Plan to Rebuild Afghanistan | Upsetment | Scoop.it

But the Marshall Plan has now been knocked off its pedestal as America's most expensive nation-building project. Afghanistan now reigns supreme, having gobbled up $104 billion in American aid. And, unlike in Europe, that money hasn't bought the kind of world-class infrastructure that became the cornerstones of numerous flourishing economies. Instead, the funds have mainly bought empty buildings, malfunctioning power plants, and a corrupt government that will be wholly dependent on Western -- read: American -- aid well into the future.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

And still the waste goes on. What could this money be doing for our own American Infrastructure, our own American farmers, our own American businesses? The grandiosity and stupidity of the American imperial agenda has to be stopped. Foreign aid should be rational and effective. If we really want to stop government waste, this kind of "nation building" is the first place to stop it.

Yes, he really said that.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I don't care about any racist implications. It's about the freedom of speech. Did he ever say something similar to Ted Nugent? Of course not. One of the things I have seen about the Right; they seldom want to hear anything. I guess that's what comes of being so sure you are right. (pun intended).

Federal review stalled after finding forensic errors by FBI lab unit spanned two decades | Upsetment | Scoop.it
After two years, inquiry into FBI forensic testimony targets 45 capital convictions, with no results reported
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Another myth of American greatness shattered. Anybody who knows about Hoover and the history of the FBI would not be surprised that the "culture of appearing perfect" he created would eventually lead to this kind of malfeasance.

Christians flee Mosul amid threats to convert or die | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Mosul was once home to 60,000 Christians who practiced their religion amid Muslim neighbors who comprise the vast majority of residents in Iraq's second largest city. No more.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The Prophet would never have approved this barbarity. Clearly the Islamic State is not Islamic. We can only hope that the Muslim people of Mosul will come to their senses (and those throughout Iraq and Syria) and will realize that this is an offense against their faith and their god.

Brain Scientist Arrested For Allegedly Pointing AR-15 At Women In Phoenix Airport

Brain Scientist Arrested For Allegedly Pointing AR-15 At Women In Phoenix Airport | Upsetment | Scoop.it
An Arizona neuroscientist was arrested Friday at Sky Harbor International Airport after he allegedly pointed an AR-15 rifle at a mother and her teenage daughter.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It isn't brain surgery to know that the gun-rights nuts are just that -- nuts! When he aimed that rifle, only luck kept some other gun carrier from shooting at him to "protect" this mother and daughter. The resulting carnage could have been horrific. I suggest this guy go back on his meds.
Please understand. We are a gun owning family and I have no problem with rational gun ownership and even reasonable open carry. The question is what is reasonable.

Hamas Agrees to Cease-Fire, But Rockets Keep Flying

Hamas Agrees to Cease-Fire, But Rockets Keep Flying | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The governing authority in the Gaza strip agreed to a ceasefire, but the violence continues
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The reality is that Hamas would fall if it actually tried to clamp down on the militants. The people of Gaza, even those who want peace, cannot live caged by Israel, so the rockets will continue to fly and the tunnels will be dug. And, of course, Israel cannot accept the goal if its destruction as a state. The only solution is creating a viable separate Palestinian state whose people have too much to lose to wage war and to change the mindset of Israel so as to see the future as more important and sacred than the past.

Federal regulators let utilities gouge customers | Al Jazeera America | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Despite obscene profits from monopoly power, government officials ignore evidence and squash challenges

The revolving door between government and business has become intolerable. It is time that we insisted on separation of regulators by making it a true and independent career and by creating clear legal penalties for those who feed at both troughs.

McCain on Arizona execution: "That's torture."
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Not often that I agree with the senior senator from my state, but I certainly do this time. I also agree when he says: "And people who were responsible should be held responsible." The question is always who is responsible. One thing I know is that the anti-government and cost-cutting efforts of the right in this state and in the country as a whole have been a major contributing force to government dysfunction. Can we have proper functioning without support for the government?

Deirdre Imus: More illegal immigrants 'pouring in' now than under Reagan

Deirdre Imus: More illegal immigrants 'pouring in' now than under Reagan | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The crisis of young Central Americans showing up at the border has presented pundits another opportunity to compare the records of President Barack Obama and President Ronald Reagan. We caught Deidre Imus, a Fox Business contributor, debating presidential immigration scorecards with Fox News analyst Lis Wiehl on July 23, 2014. "What has happened under President (Barack) Obama, is people thinking they can come here, especially unaccompanied minors, thinking they are getting amnesty," Imus said on her husband Don’s show Imus in the Morning. Wiehl shot back that this had been going on a long time and in fact, it was no different under Reagan. ...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is the kind of distorted "reporting" that makes Fox so especially ridiculous and the kind of right wing thinking that makes it so difficult to have meaningful government. What to do with people who don't bother with evidence? Certainly, it is time to demand more factual reporting.

The Immigrant Kids Have Health Issues — But Not The Ones You'd Think

The Immigrant Kids Have Health Issues — But Not The Ones You'd Think | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Politicians charge that the nearly 60,000 unaccompanied minors who've come to the U.S. could put the nation at risk for everything from TB to mumps. Health officials tell a different story.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While I consider these kids undocumented aliens, not immigrants, at least until they are granted asylum, that doesn't mean I support the right wing's lies. They are not bringing exotic diseases. They are not a threat to our public health. They are, however, emotionally scarred and need mental health services. Sadly, that is a concept which is often beyond the ken of the conservative mind set.

Obama aides were warned of brewing border crisis

Obama aides were warned of brewing border crisis | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Administration officials initially saw influx of unaccompanied children as ‘local problem,’ said one expert.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Is is always easy in hindsight to know which crises should have been attended to. It is also very easy to turn each event into a media crisis instead of recognizing it as a problem needing solution. I am not sure these kids, no matter how sad the story, represent a crisis. I am absolutely certain that their status represents a problem, actually part of a problem which must be addressed through immigration reform. The real crisis is the grid-locking of government which makes it so difficult to deal with anything and everything.

DOD releases arms to Israel, official says

DOD releases arms to Israel, official says | Upsetment | Scoop.it

The Department of Defense has released arms to Israel from a weapons stockpile maintained within the borders of the close U.S. ally, a defense official confirmed Wednesday."

"...the United States elected to supply 120mm mortar shells and 40mm grenades from the stockpile because the arms were approaching the date they would require replacement, he said. Israel regularly buys such ammunition when the United States rotates its stocks, he said, and the United States would meanwhile send new ammunition to refresh the stockpile."

Kenneth Weene's insight:

For years I have been saying that the military-industrial-espionage industry has a vested interest in war because it gives them a chance to use up and therefore buy more ordinance.

An apparently innocuous resolution intended to honor Pope Francis is having trouble making its way through the House of Representatives – reportedly mired in politics because some lawmakers view the pontiff as "too liberal."

Kenneth Weene's insight:

This highlights the need to change the political process in this country. Obviously, the suit will wind its way to irrelevance over the next two years. Meanwhile, it totally upends government functioning. I only hope that the vast majority of Americans recognize how the GOP has become a party of negativity and stupidity and send the idjits packing come Nov.

Even Left-Wing Congressmen Can’t Quit Israel

Even Left-Wing Congressmen Can’t Quit Israel | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Despite grassroots outrage at Operation Protective Edge, left-wing members of the House and Senate won’t criticize Israel’s ongoing incursion into Gaza.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

As the warren of tunnels is being discovered, both those into Israel and those connecting to Egypt, I would expect many politicians want to keep a low profile until the extent of that underground threat has been made clear and it has been eliminated. When Israel discovered or perhaps even stumbled onto that network of threats, the entire situation became much murkier, just as it did when the Israeli's obtained the "iron dome" technology from the U.S.. This is a war and there has been deliberate intensification and instigation on both sides. The result, as in all wars, is the suffering of common people. That the suffering has been one-sided doesn't change that reality. Both sides have to work towards peace or things will only get worse. BOTH SIDES.

U.S. judge signs order to seize Kurdish oil from tanker off Texas

U.S. judge signs order to seize Kurdish oil from tanker off Texas | Upsetment | Scoop.it
HOUSTON (Reuters) - Acting on a request from the central government in Iraq, a U.S. judge has signed an order telling the U.S. Marshals Service to seize a cargo of oil from Iraqi Kurdistan aboard a tanker
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I have no idea of the legal issues involved here, but this I do know. The last group we want to alienate in Iraq is the Kurds, who are the only pro-American group left. Having made a total hash of things in Iraq, the U.S. government is on the verge of returning to the scene of the folly to add fuel to the fires. George H.W. Bush knew better than to destroy the tyrant who was holding that country together. His son loosed the devil. Some judge in Texas, probably appointed by W., is now trying to put the genie back in the bottle. Sorry, but I think this incredibly stupid.

ISIS’s Black Flags Are Flying in Europe

ISIS’s Black Flags Are Flying in Europe | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The symbol of the murderous Islamic State is waving in The Hague. ‘Death to the Jews,’ shout the demonstrators. Yet the Dutch government authorized the protests.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Call it the fear of politicians or an inherent problem of democracy; either way European governments and people may yet be the hapless victims of the worst of Arab rage and distorted Muslim fanaticism. Nigeria, Afghanistan, Syria and Iraq, and now even the streets of The Hague: the extremists of Islam are spreading terror and waging war. Sadly, the vast numbers of Muslims are (just like those Dutch politicians) too hesitant to take a stand and throw the hate-sowers out.

An 'intensely awkward congressional hearing'

An 'intensely awkward congressional hearing' | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A GOP congressman, during an "intensely awkward" hearing, assumed a U.S. State Department official was a foreigner. It was extraordinary - and not in a good way
Kenneth Weene's insight:

People ask if the right wing of the GOP is racist. Yes, it is; and this is one small example. To assume based on name or appearance that one is not an American, especially in that setting, gives clear evidence of an underlying racist attitude. It is that unwillingness to recognize the diversity of our people and the equal worth of all our citizens that bothers me.

Video Shows Islamic State Blowing Up Iraq's Tomb Of Jonah

Video Shows Islamic State Blowing Up Iraq's Tomb Of Jonah | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The destruction of the holy site has drawn criticism from the Sunni allies of the so-called Islamic State and may cause a rift between the Sunni groups.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

When a group feels free to defile history (to say nothing of the faith of others), it clearly has placed itself outside the human community. I would love to see the Iraqi government, along with other nations, create a safe corridor for the escape of all those who wish to be followed by a siege of this rogue would-be state's territory. It is time that the Iraqi people in places like Mosul got to vote on something meaningful even if it requires them to use their feet as part of that process.

The head of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee said the party "absolutely" stands by Sen. John Walsh (D-Mont.) despite a report that he plagiarized substantial portions of an academic paper seven years ago.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While I am certainly upset that this man plagiarized and it would impact my decision if he were running in my state, I can't help wondering why the "Ware College" is offering degrees and to what extent this kind of "deceptive" practice permeates the place. We aren't talking about an academic environment but a military one. Perhaps all the academic papers and degrees presented there should be vetted for their academic quality before this is over.

Why a Gaza cease-fire could reinforce long-term conflict | Al Jazeera America | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Analysis: Everyone wants the fighting to stop but not necessarily to reintegrate Gaza into a wider peace process
Kenneth Weene's insight:

A thoughtful analysis. In the end for all the words we may offer, the suffering of the Palestinian people is as great a humanitarian crisis as has occurred in modern times. Israel is working its way into pariah status, and those who shoot rockets and kill dumb teenagers will ultimately have their own crazy victory, a reign of evil.
