Trump Administration Moves To Roll Back Birth Control Coverage

Trump Administration Moves To Roll Back Birth Control Coverage | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Nancy Pelosi called the draft of a new rule "sickening."
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Under the guise of opposing abortion, the current administration is moving to end a program that has actually helped prevent unwanted pregnancies. The far right sees women not as man's equal but as fields to be plowed and from which will spring forth the fruit of male seeds. And, if you think that's what the Bible calls for, you really don't get the wonder of nature at all. I don't often stand too close to Nancy Pelosi, but this is indeed sickening.

This is Lillian Parker Thomas, a journalist, was a local and correspondent editor for the New York Freeman, and she is believed to have been the first black woman to be a professional theater critic.

Kenneth Weene's insight:
They were Black and the were women and they lived in America in the late nineteenth century, but all the prejudice and gender expectations of a hidebound society didn't stop them.

NIGERIA MARKS 3 YEARS SINCE SCHOOLGIRLS' MASS ABDUCTION

NIGERIA MARKS 3 YEARS SINCE SCHOOLGIRLS' MASS ABDUCTION | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Nigerians on Friday marked three years since the mass abduction of nearly 300 schoolgirls by Boko Haram extremists amid anger that government efforts to negotiate their freedom appear to have stalled.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
The mix of tribalism, militant islam, and social inequity have fueled years of pain for the people of Nigeria. The young women who are being taken to become slaves, mistresses, and for some suicide-bombers represent the very worst that we humans are capable of doing to innocents among us. And, what was the great crime that these girls committed, the offense before Boko Haram's understanding of the will of Allah? It was to, as their parents wished, go to school. IMHO, any man who thinks his god is telling him to stop girls from getting an education has a serious problem with his own penis, which is obviously the only head he has. Much as I try to empathize with the anger of all militant groups and to understand their need for change, I cannot find an ounce of understanding for this kind of cruelty to young women and disregard for their rights to grow up. I know that in the end, the government of Nigeria will have to find some kind of rapprochement with these monsters, but I honestly hope that the final settlement involves a rather large number of castrations among the leaders and those who have perpetrated such crimes. What do you think, should castration be a punishment in some offenses?

The 'Day Without A Woman' Is Happening. Here's What That Means.

The 'Day Without A Woman' Is Happening. Here's What That Means. | Upsetment | Scoop.it
On March 8, women will strike.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Of course this leaves some fascinating questions. First, what would happen if women also went on a sexual strike not just a work one? Which leads me to ask another question, will we see the effect of this "Do Without a Woman" day in nine months? And, while I understand the idea that some women have responsibilities from which they cannot simply withdraw, take for example nursing mothers, shouldn't many women who seem essential, such as nurses, teachers be the very ones to go on strike? Then, there's the whole notion of food. In most homes, it is the woman who cooks. Should they perhaps let us men go hungry for a day? Finally on my list: Is one day sufficient? Realistically, I can live quite nicely with the mess I produce in one day. My wife doesn't have to clean up after me every day, heck probably not even every week. After all, I can do laundry and some cooking even wash dishes. But, when push comes to shove, how many of us men can maintain the order and cleanliness necessary in our lives without our female partners? Hmm, I wonder, how long should would it take if women were to truly stop doing before we men would all be on our knees.

East do you think? Should women strike? How long? Oh, and will you wear red on March 8?

Pence Gives Odd Answer To Young Girl Upset By Trump's Remarks About Women

Pence Gives Odd Answer To Young Girl Upset By Trump's Remarks About Women | Upsetment | Scoop.it
It seems like a safe bet to assume that 11-year-olds’ primary concern is not “law and order” or that they might not know what it means to describe Hillary Clinton’s foreign policy as “feckless.”
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Seriously, is this the best that Mr. Pence can offer to a young girl? Is this the answer that he would offer his own child? Sure they want to pivot away from there negatives, but sometimes you have to deal with things. Sometimes you have to own up. If you were Mike Pence, what answer would you have given? Seriously, let's offer some actual statements that he and Trump could give to this youngster and other young women (heck and to older women as well.)

Jewish woman detained for taking Torah scroll to Western Wall in Jerusalem - The Boston Globe

Jewish woman detained for taking Torah scroll to Western Wall in Jerusalem - The Boston Globe | Upsetment | Scoop.it
JERUSALEM — Israeli police briefly detained a leader of a Jewish women’s rights group on Tuesday for bringing a Torah scroll to the Western Wall, signaling a resumption of the battle over rituals at the holy site here.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I want to remind people that ridiculous sexist attitudes are part of traditional Islam but also of Judaism. Of course, in Catholicism and the Orthodox there are also restrictions on who can play what sacramental roles. At lease, in the US, we may actually have a woman president in the near future. There are many issues in the world that really matter. For me the question of who brings a parchment scroll to an archeological site really isn't one of them. However, the role of ultra-orthodox Jews in the policies of Israel is. Many of these same rabbis stand in the way of peace in the region, a peace that would recognize a Palestinian state and seek reasonable accommodation, especially in Jerusalem.

Why More Teen Girls Are Getting Genital Plastic Surgery

Why More Teen Girls Are Getting Genital Plastic Surgery | Upsetment | Scoop.it
We have ignored porn’s impact on girls’ sexual confidence—and its likely role as a culprit in the alarming increase in surgeries
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This is incredibly sad. Young women should know that they are beautiful and more importantly that they have great value beyond the image of their bodies. We need to encourage the young—male and female—to look at their bodies with knowledge and love and to reject the cartoon thinking of porn, hero movies, and video-games.

Indian court allows 10-year-old rape victim to have an abortion

Indian court allows 10-year-old rape victim to have an abortion | Upsetment | Scoop.it

India registers an average of 6 rapes a day. This girl had crossed 20-week legal limit after which terminations are usually only allowed if there is danger to life of mother or baby.

Kenneth Weene's insight:
We hear so much of the way in which Muslims mistreat women, but sadly abuse is not limited to followers of Muhammad. Take India, where the Hindu population has a horrendous record on rape. So, here we have in this one case a microcosm of moral decisions. Should this 10 year old girl be forced to carry her child to term? And if she does, what would happen to the child? Who would take care of either the young mother or the baby? Then there is the plea of the girl's own mother that the rapist, the stepfather, be freed from jail because who will take care of her and the children, presumably including this 10 year old victim. Finally, let us consider the worst—for me—insight in the story. No matter what else happens, this child of ten's life is ruined. Such disgust, such sorrow, such a sense of helplessness. Sometimes the depravity and misery of humanity overwhelms.

FGM charge for Detroit doctor Jumana Nagarwala in US first - BBC News

FGM charge for Detroit doctor Jumana Nagarwala in US first - BBC News | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Jumana Nagarwala could face life in jail if convicted of mutilating young girls over more than a decade.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
She has been charged, but not yet convicted, so we shouldn't decide this woman physician's fate yet. However, if she has in fact been mutilating the genitalia of young women, there is no punishment I would consider inappropriate. Indeed, I'm not sure that male circumcision shouldn't also be illegal even though I was brought up as a Jew. However, the simple reality is that men who have been circumcised can still enjoy sex and do not grow up feeling mutilated. By the way, FGM is not to be found in the Quran; it is not a religious duty no matter what this person or any other might try to claim. If anything, it is an offense against the Judea-Christian-Muslim god who commands us to be fruitful and multiply since it makes the bearing of children more difficult and sex less likely to occur.

Here's a question: If this woman is convicted and placed in the general population of a women's prison, even a federal one, she is likely to be horribly abused. However, should she be given special treatment or allowed to suffer? If special treatment, what should it be?

The Harmless-Sounding Phrase That Is Terrible for All Women

The Harmless-Sounding Phrase That Is Terrible for All Women | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Find out why Karen Rinaldi thinks calling men "good guys" reveals sexism and is damaging to women.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I found this piece very thought provoking. Do we too often excuse the bad behavior of men because we think that underneath they are good guys while holding women to a higher standard? Do I too often excuse my own moments of nasty behind that same kind of rationalization? Does testosterone give men an excuse that women are denied? What do you think?

‘Is that not correct?’: Male GOP lawmaker asks why men should pay for prenatal coverage | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The moment took place during a committee hearing on Republicans' plan to revise Obamacare.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This may go down as one of the stupidest comments made by a GOP politician in the war on women. I can only hope that his wife gives him reason for an emergency visit to the urologist. This is a guy who wants to ban abortion, defend Planned Parenthood, and now cut insurance coverage for prenatal care. I guess the resulting damage to those fetuses doesn't matter to him. I suppose he won't want to fund the care they may require if they are born with problems. Does this idiot has a brain, it is wedged up his rectum. At least that's my opinion. What's yours?

Clinics for World’s Vulnerable Brace for Trump’s Anti-Abortion Cuts

Clinics for World’s Vulnerable Brace for Trump’s Anti-Abortion Cuts | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Health workers say President Trump’s ban on abortion counseling will hurt even those health services that do not involve abortions.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Just one more reason I supported the Women's March. This administration is already proving deadly to women, especially those in the most vulnerable places on earth. I cannot help but wonder how many of the women who support such draconian anti-abortion moves have thought about the women or the children who will suffer as a result. The best way to reduce abortions is to provide good sex education, free contraceptive services, and good pre- and perinatal care. Instead, this is the kind of stupidity that drives women to resort to unsafe abortions and infanticide. Is that really the direction in which the US wants to lead the poorer countries of the world?

Meet Sultana, the Taliban’s Worst Fear

Meet Sultana, the Taliban’s Worst Fear | Upsetment | Scoop.it
An Afghan girl’s hunger for knowledge is stronger than the threat of an acid attack.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
What happened to the theocratic views of the New England Puritans? They founded schools and their children began to think. Theocracy fell before the onslaught of rationality and humanism. That is the only way theocratic thinking is ever defeated, by educating the young. Are there risks to letting young people from Islamic countries into ours? Yes; there may well be some terrorists and some may be alienated by the enormity of the change from home to America. BUT, if we do not offer young people the future that can be theirs, we will leave power in the hands of traditions and would be holy men.

Even more upsetting is the propensity of the American government to welcome with open arms the militaristic scions of dictators. Happily we train them to use weapons. How much better to equip minds with the tools to make the world a better one.

FDA Revisits Safety Of The Essure Contraceptive Device

FDA Revisits Safety Of The Essure Contraceptive Device | Upsetment | Scoop.it
It's the only available, nonsurgical permanent birth control option that's FDA-approved. But thousands of women have complained of serious side effects like severe pain, heavy bleeding and depression.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If I am reading this properly, some women have serious side-effects and there's about a 10% failure rate, yeah there should be a review. On the other hand, many women (and men) want an easy, permanent form of contraception. Perhaps that isn't as scientifically challenging as some other goals for medical research, it is one we should support, especially those who want to see fewer (and someday perhaps no) abortions. Indeed, wouldn't it be wonderful if we had non-surgical, permanent  way to stop pregnancies except when we wanted them, a removable insert. The women of the world deserve control over conception.

But when we're talking about a key issue, something that is in the news every day for weeks and a dumb-dumb says something like this, please explain to me how any woman, any woman at all, can consider voting for him. As a man who cares, I couldn't vote for this turkey after this comment. Sadly, his attitude reflects the entire right wing of the GOP in their disregard for the people of our country, especially women. Can't the Republican Party do better? If not, perhaps it's time for a new political party, one that cares about the real America not just the corporations.

MLK's Mother Was Assassinated, Too: The Forgotten Women Of Black History Month

MLK's Mother Was Assassinated, Too: The Forgotten Women Of Black History Month | Upsetment | Scoop.it
On June 23rd, 1973, Alberta Williams King was gunned down while she played the organ for the “Lord’s Prayer” at Ebenezer Baptist Church. As a Christian civil rights activist, she was assassinated...just like her son, Martin Luther King, Jr. But most people remember only one. Until a month ago, I was one of those people.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I never knew that she, too, was martyred to the cause of equality. I would suggest that much of the preoccupation behind the Second Amendment when it was enacted was fear of Black slaves rebelling and of Native Americans defending their lands. Today, it seems like that same goal of oppressing others continues, but the gun culture would tell us that it is they who are oppressed.
