After a story is published, a minimum wage worker loses her job

After a story is published, a minimum wage worker loses her job | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A reporter reflects on what happens when the subject of his story loses her job.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Those who have read "Tales From the Dew Drop Inne" know that I have a soft-spot for those who are trying to hold on to the bottom rungs of the ladder. Shanna Tippen could well be the poster-child for those desperate people. Her story certainly illustrates why minimum wage workers need union and  government protections if they are going to survive with dignity in our society. Meanwhile, I you live in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, try to help this hardworking woman a decent job. She doesn't deserve to be punished for talking honestly to a reporter. As for her ex-employer, who is clearly not telling the truth (She walked out on the job she so needed because he wanted to ask her about what she had already told the world?! I don't think so.), if you are passing through Pine Bluff, stop by his motel and tell him you won't be staying there because you don't believe in employers punishing people for talking to the press. Maybe, just maybe, he'll get the idea.

Here’s a bit of history that you probably never learned in school.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

When we think of Ferguson, it may be a good idea to remember how many Americans have died as a result of similar social issues. Be sure to join us on It Matters Radio Aug 28, when we'll be talking about the role of Africans at the time of the American Revolution. You may be very surprised.

Tennessee Republicans Want To Shut That Whole Union Thing Down

Tennessee Republicans Want To Shut That Whole Union Thing Down | Upsetment | Scoop.it
This post has been updated.

This week, employees at an auto plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee are voting on whether to form a union.

It’s interesting for a few reasons: Tennessee is a low-union-density state; the Volkswagen plant in question would be the first foreign auto facility to be organized in the South, marking a growth opportunity for the United Auto Workers; and VW itself has taken a neutral-to-positive stance toward the union, citing its positive relations with employee organizations at factories elsewhere in the world.

But the most interesting part of all is the panicked reaction of local Republican politicians, who are scrambling to find ways to attack the organizing effort and deter the formation of a union.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The Republicans can't help themselves. They only know how to make war on the working class and women. They just don't get the idea that individuals and their rights are more important than business. Heck, not even when the business in question agrees with the workers.
If you work for a living, do you really want to vote for people from a party that can't accept your right to organize with your peers?

In honor of the Laboring men and women who built this country, let us remember their sacrifices and the battle they had to fight for dignity and rights. (Be sure to listen to the song. )

Coaxing Fire and Police Staffs in Arizona to Cut Own Pensions

Coaxing Fire and Police Staffs in Arizona to Cut Own Pensions | Upsetment | Scoop.it
With many pension plans for the state’s police officers and firefighters underfunded, the firefighter association’s leader says his group must protect the public from financial ruin.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is one of those conservative idea wolves in responsible citizen sheep clothing. Do cities and other levels of government need to renegotiate their pension plans to stay solvent? Sure along with raising taxes to pay those obligations and not allowing pension funds to be raided by either the government or corporations that "manage them." However, let's be aware that many workers, especially fire and police, put themselves at incredible risk and often have careers cut short by injury, etc. Perhaps we should as a country begin adding to the Social Security taxes of high income earners to offset some of these public pensions for states , counties, and municipalities.

Oh, Mr. Jeffries has made a small political career out of challenging pensions of others and he has supported conservative, anti-tax candidates. I have to wonder if this position is actually his own unique thinking or if he has been receiving some kind of inducement from ALEC or the like. The Times should be looking at those questions before running this piece without.
