Wave Of Attacks Kill 50 Soldiers In Egypt

Wave Of Attacks Kill 50 Soldiers In Egypt | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The death toll rises after seemingly coordinated blasts in a region of the country that has seen increasing insurgent activity.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

As the Muslim world implodes, the only possible solution for the existing Islamic countries is to come together to work for stability. Forget theological differences and recognize the threat of regional instability. The U.S. and Europe should be supporting that co-operation and encouraging historical enemies and lukewarm friends to work together to stop the violence and terror. That work, by the way, must include education and economic opportunity for all. The Islamic world includes way to many poor people, way to many people who have in effect been cut off from personal achievement and accomplishment.

U.S. Won’t Back Egypt’s Attacks on ISIS

U.S. Won’t Back Egypt’s Attacks on ISIS | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Two longtime allies are attacking ISIS—and growing frustrated with one another. That’s good news for the so-called Islamic State.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

We need a coordinated and cooperative worldwide approach to terrorist organizations. The countries involved must agree on their goals and especially on the identification of which organizations are considered terrorist. The problem is that one country may see a particular threat — as Egypt clearly does, but that doesn't mean their actions will help the larger goal of constraining terrorism everywhere. If Mr. Obama has a problem, it is his overly abstract approach that will make it difficult to identify terrorism, especially coordinated terrorism. Finding the right line to pursue is not going to be easy.

Firebombing at German paper that ran Charlie Hebdo cartoons

Firebombing at German paper that ran Charlie Hebdo cartoons | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A German tabloid that reprinted cartoons from the French satirical paper Charlie Hebdo lampooning the Prophet Mohammed was targeted in firebombing Sunday, police said. With security services on high alert after a killing spree in Paris by Islamic extremists, police in the northern German port city of Hamburg said no one was injured in the blaze at the headquarters of the regional daily Hamburger Morgenpost, which caused only slight damage. Whether there was a connection between the Charlie Hebdo
Kenneth Weene's insight:

We must not allow terrorism to win, not in France, not in Germany, and certainly not in America. Not the terrorism of the Radical Islamics nor the terrorism of the American right. Not the terrorism of the criminal nor the terrorism of the police.

Gunmen storm Paris satirical newspaper, killing at least 12

Gunmen storm Paris satirical newspaper, killing at least 12 | Upsetment | Scoop.it
France is on high alert after gunmen fled the deadliest terror attack in the country in at least two decades. President Hollande called the shootings at the weekly paper a “terrorist attack.”
Kenneth Weene's insight:

To attack the press and especially the satirist press is an attack on the very freedom that allows us to exist as individuals rather than as members of a collective. If the early reports are right and these were from an Islamist group, it is extra upsetting. I know little of Islam, but I am quite sure that Muhammad, who spoke against the tide and his culture to establish this new faith, would not approve of such repression. I fear that many Muslims are so obsessed with their faith as to have lost connection to their God and his love for humanity.

Evidence from CCTV above office shows alleged fatal shootings of Nadeem Nawara and Mohammad Salameh by Israeli forces
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Terrorism is winning because we are becoming the terrorists, be it the Israeli Army or the American police, violence is becoming the answer rather than the sin.

No, I do not advocate that we all become as Gandhi or Martin Luther King, Jr. We are not capable of that, but we should stop seeing ourselves as making war on what we oppose. We should try to reach understanding before we reach battle.

Poland to Pay $262,000 to Inmates Held at Secret C.I.A. Prison

Poland to Pay $262,000 to Inmates Held at Secret C.I.A. Prison | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The foreign minister said his country would abide by a court ruling that ordered it to pay reparations to two terrorism suspects held at a secret site.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The CIA has become a real menace to our security. The use of torture only encourages radicalism and extremism. Those terrorists who have been tried and convicted with normal law-enforcement approaches set a much better example for the world and do not become martyrs to be emulated. Had Henry VIII not cut of Fisher and More's heads, the  development of religious tolerance in England would have been much easier for all.

Islamic State threatens to kill two Japanese hostages, demands ransom from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe

Islamic State threatens to kill two Japanese hostages, demands ransom from Prime Minister Shinzo Abe | Upsetment | Scoop.it
"You willingly have volunteered to take part in this crusade," an alleged militant said in a video.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

How should countries react to this kind of demand? What should the nations of the world be doing to combat the madness of ISIS and similar groups? Obviously paying ransoms and giving aid and comfort are not a solution. Equally obviously, saying "We don't care what happens to our citizens," would be political suicide for any government. What would you do if you were the leader of Japan, or of any country caught in this predicament?

New Terrorist Attacks Hit France

New Terrorist Attacks Hit France | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A gunman took six hostages and reportedly killed two people at a kosher supermarket in Paris today as the brothers who killed 12 at Charlie Hebdo survived a shootout with police.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

At what point does the barbarism of the terrorist evoke and even justify a similar level of barbarism from the community? In the long run, it seems to me that terrorist tactics can only produce more state terrorism. We have seen that militarizing of the police take place in the U.S., and that over a relatively small threat to "Homeland Security." Will Europe find itself turning against its immigrants? Will France become a battlefield of government against mosque? Is such a reaction what these criminals hope to create? Meanwhile, I repeat, "Moi aussi, je suis Charlie."

‘Over My Dead Body’: Spies Fight Obama Push to Downsize Terror War

‘Over My Dead Body’: Spies Fight Obama Push to Downsize Terror War | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The Obama administration concluded in 2012 that al Qaeda posed no direct threat to the U.S.—and has sought to scale back the fight ever since, over intel officials’ rising objections.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Some basic truths:
My enemies enemies are my friends - so all terrorists will tend to be friends as long as we are their enemy.
Religion binds friends and separates enemies - As long as we give terrorists common cause, we give them reason to paper over religious differences and share common belief; but if we no longer give them focus, we allow their religious differences to splinter them.
It is easier to connect to our brothers in their pain than to our brothers in their happiness - Poverty allows for more affinity among terrorist groups than the improvement of life in the countries in which they now exist.

The same symptom may be the result of many diseases - We need to identify the root causes  and issues in each community and nation, not assume that all terrorists are motivated by the same long-term desires (beyond power and economic strength).
