Authorities: Teacher calmed teen who held classmates hostage

Authorities: Teacher calmed teen who held classmates hostage | Upsetment | Scoop.it
(AP) — With 29 terrified students looking on, a West Virginia high school teacher managed to calm a 14-year-old student who pointed a gun at her in her classroom, giving a police chief time to arrive and convince the boy to free his peers and surrender, authorities said. State Police Lt. Michael Baylous said it began after 1 p.m. Tuesday with the student taking a pistol into a second-floor classroom at Philip Barbour High School, a drab brown campus in a rural area of tree-peppered rolling hill
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Schools are just starting for the year and already a gun incident. What is happening to our society? Meanwhile, the NRA will probably issue a fatwa against this teacher for showing that guns are not always the best way to stop people with guns.

Students protest after teacher suspended for showing 1959 PSA about the dangers of homosexuality | Upsetment | Scoop.it

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Americans no longer value the reality of history and its lessons only the mythology they create from it. Be it from the right or the left, there is a concerted effort to blot out truth in the service of political positions. Let us forget what we said and did yesterday; today's propaganda must be respected—at least until it is changed tomorrow. We will be a poorer country for the loss of our real past.

Award-Winning Teacher Fired for Reading an Allen Ginsberg Poem

Award-Winning Teacher Fired for Reading an Allen Ginsberg Poem | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Defenders of Connecticut teacher David Olio say one mistake shouldn’t have cost him his job. But why is the work of a towering figure of 20th-century American poetry out of bounds?
Kenneth Weene's insight:

What is happening to America? Are we afraid of sex? Are we afraid of individual's sexuality? I think not; I think we are afraid of thinking, of encouraging people to actually consider and discuss ideas. How sad that is for us as a nation. So long to literature, poetry, art, music, and all that enriches. The young people who are not encouraged to explore such ideas and such writing might have become the artists of the future, but they are being turned away by such political idiocy. I hope that at least one private school will hire Mr. Olio. Lord knows we need teachers like him.

Ruling on teacher job security is an attack on students, unions say

Ruling on teacher job security is an attack on students, unions say | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Teachers union officials denounced a ruling Tuesday by a Los Angeles County Superior Court judge deeming job protections for teachers in California as unconstitutional as a misguided attack on teachers and students.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

As one who has taught public school and whose father was a teacher, I think the court is right. While teachers who are performing their duties must have tenure and protection, the tenure system has become a wall behind which the untalented, the lazy, and the sick have been able to hide. The teachers' unions should long ago have supported reform which allowed for appropriate review of teacher performance.

Teachers, good teachers, deserve our respect and far better pay than most of them receive. But that doesn't mean that every teacher should be protected no matter how little effort they put in nor how badly they do their jobs.
