WATCH: White cop brutally beats black teen for riding bike — then charges her with assault

WATCH: White cop brutally beats black teen for riding bike — then charges her with assault | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This is why the Black Lives Matter movement exists because of the unnecessary violence against Black Americans, often done under cover of authority and in the name of the law. Let's be honest, if these kids had been white there is no way they would have been stopped and charged for trespassing or anything else. It is vile behavior like this display from Jared Williams that degrades our society and law enforcement officers everywhere.

On Crime Bill and the Clintons, Young Blacks Clash With Parents

On Crime Bill and the Clintons, Young Blacks Clash With Parents | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Young African-Americans are challenging Clinton-era policies on crime, diverging from their elders who enthusiastically support Hillary Clinton and the former president.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Did the Clinton reforms work to make lives better? Not really. Like much done in Washington, the unintended consequences were seriously harmful. One reason is that laws like the Clinton Crime Bill and Welfare Reform are based on the goal of controlling abuse and misconduct rather than on the goal of inducing better, more positive conduct. Government should be helping those who need better than trying to keep them for reaching for the brass rings they can see before them. When real chances are available then we will see people give up the false promises of drugs, crime, and cheating. That's one reason that older Black Americans should be supporting Sanders even as they give the Clinton's a wave of fond farewell.

America’s Police Problem Isn’t Just About Police

America’s Police Problem Isn’t Just About Police | Upsetment | Scoop.it
America’s Police Problem isn't Just About Police. It’s about race, poverty, and sky-high levels of violence. Why is the United States such a global outlier?
Kenneth Weene's insight:
A powerful and cogent discussion of the forces that lead to Americas police violence, and the author doesn't even touch on the growing militarization of police or The War on Drugs and its implications for violence.

The Disproportionate Risks of Driving While Black

The Disproportionate Risks of Driving While Black | Upsetment | Scoop.it
An examination of traffic stops and arrests in Greensboro, N.C., uncovered wide racial differences in measure after measure of police conduct.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Forget the argument that there are many good police officers; there is something simply wrong about our nation's approach to policing, especially in its disregard for the dignity of our Black citizens. Yes, Black Lives Matter, but more than that, the Quality of Black Lives Matters.

Huckabee Claims Black People Aren't Technically Citizens During Critique of Unjust Laws

Huckabee Claims Black People Aren't Technically Citizens During Critique of Unjust Laws | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The legal case for Kentucky clerk Kim Davis' refusal to issue marriage licenses to gay couples is pretty thin—as Slate's Mark Joseph Stern put it, "she claims she’s acting 'under God’s authority,' while her extremist attorneys have filed rambling, impudent briefs that attack the Supreme Court’s decision [in Obergefell v....
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I keep saying that the Confederacy is coming back to life in attacks on the Fourteenth Amendment. That Amendment took the place of a "peace treaty" at the end of the Civil War. (No way to sign a peace treaty with a never-existing government, and the North never recognized that the Confederate States existed.) The Amendment spelled out the terms of the South's surrender, right down to issues of citizenship, debt, and rights of Southern soldiers. Most especially it did away with the idea of "States' Rights." Clearly, Mr. Huckabee doesn't want to recognize that the 14th is the "Law of the Land." Be sure you read my piece on the Amendment. ( https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/what-does-fourteenth-amendment-anchor-kenneth-weene?published=t ) because we must defend the constitution and our nation.

This Black Driver’s Mistake Was Looking a Police Officer in the Eye

This Black Driver’s Mistake Was Looking a Police Officer in the Eye | Upsetment | Scoop.it
John Felton was driving to his brother’s house in Dayton, Ohio, on a recent night when he noticed a police car tailing him. Not wanting to give the officer any excuse to pull him over, Felton, who is black and was visiting Dayton from Michigan, tried to drive extra carefully....
Kenneth Weene's insight:

So to make eye contact while Black is different from making eye contact when White? There is something seriously wrong with that. It is pure and simple discrimination. That the police department is trying to make it a personal issue rather than a disciplinary one demonstrates that once again institutional racism is a problem in America. Should the cop be disciplined? I don't know, but certainly made an example. How about a simple statement saying something like,  This officer was wrong in his actions and we cannot condone such racist law enforcement. Future incidents will meet with disciplinary action." ?

Black delivery driver replaced by manager after Lowe’s customer demands white employee

Black delivery driver replaced by manager after Lowe’s customer demands white employee | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Marcus Bradley says he was shocked when his boss accepted the customer's racist demands
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I's delighted that Lowe's fired the manager. I hope somebody tells the customer that she is scum; I'm sure like the ass she is that she will be bragging to her friends about how she stood up for her rights and "Christian civilization" or some such bullshit.

Charlotte Fire Department investigators have determined a fire that destroyed part of the Briar Creek Road Baptist Church early Wednesday morning was intentionally set.

Video: Chicago cop opens fire on black teens in car | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A retired Cook County judge says that a Chicago police officer’s actions in December 2013 are the most disturbing he has seen in his long career.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is the kind of abuse of power and common sense by police that make it impossible for me as a caring person to stop trying to raise the awareness of others. If you read Tales From the Dew Drop Inne, you will find both my concern about this kind of abuse and my appreciation of good policing. We cannot do with out the one, but we must get rid of the other.

Black America is getting screwed: Shocking new study highlights the depths of economic disparities

Black America is getting screwed: Shocking new study highlights the depths of economic disparities | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Black retail workers are twice as likely to live below the poverty line, and twice as likely to be unemployed. Why?
Kenneth Weene's insight:

As a kid, I barely knew that Black people (or brown or Asian) people existed.  The world in which I lived was White and indifferent to others.  As a result, I had no notion of the realities of segregation. When I was 14, I had occasion to drive from Florida to Boston, and stopped in a North Carolina hamlet for breakfast. It was delicious, and I couldn't figure out why we were the only customers. The reason, quite simply, was that we had stopped in a Black community, so the regulars were "politely" waiting for us to finish eating before they could have their breakfast. From that morning on, I have been agonizingly aware that our culture has a major fault line running through it. Have things improved? Sure. But, the built in biases and preferences continue. Worse, they self-perpetuate. I do not pretend to have the answers, but I do know that until we give every youngster a chance to flourish this country cannot be the shining beacon on the hill.

White America’s Waco insanity: The shocking realities it ignores about racism & violence | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The response to the Twin Peaks shootout says everything you need to know about how white privilege really works
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While the police in Texas did a wonderful job of handling this explosive situation, the point Brittney Cooper makes about the way this extensive and explosive White criminal behavior was dealt with in comparison to the way police routinely respond to even a whiff of Black violence is damning of American law enforcement and reveals the extent of our racism as a country.

Foreign Lives Matter

American racism at home and abroad only highlights the hypocrisy of U.S. foreign policy. And the rest of the world isn't buying America's message anymore.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I hope that everybody in the state department, the White House, and on the foreign affairs committees of Congress reads this article; but I doubt they will. It might make them think about how what happens inside the (dis)United States actually plays on the world stage.

The results show one reason why Obama's presidency has been so divisive.

Ronald Johnson’s mother said she doesn’t want Chicago’s hush money because she claims official footage proves police lied about him holding a gun.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If the film footage shows no gun, then not only should the cop go down but every other cop who was involved at the scene should be penalized. This is actually the core of the Black Lives Matter campaign. the blue culture's willingness to condone  its own brutality towards people of color in the name of law and security.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Let us assume for the moment that Mr. Blake does look like the suspect in the case. How does that make race irrelevant? Would a white suspect in a non-violent fraud case be tackled to the ground that way? That's the question, and Bratton in no way addressed the issue. Was the person identified as the suspect, Mr. Blake doing anything to escape or to indicate a threat to the officers? He was standing, waiting for a car, and texting. Are we to believe that a white man in the same situation would have been thrown to the ground and handcuffed and held without being given a chance to identify himself? If so, then our entire system of law enforcement has become the wild west. Nope, Mr. Bratton, I think you are lying to yourself.

St. Louis police fatally shoot teen while trying to issue search warrant : News

St. Louis police fatally shoot teen while trying to issue search warrant : News | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Shooting happened on Walton Avenue near Page Boulevard in Fountain Park neighborhood
Kenneth Weene's insight:

As much as I oppose the "War on Drugs" and detest police violence, I honestly believe that any Black American who engages in the drug trade and arms himself with a gun to protect that trade is not only setting himself up for death by cop but is also a traitor to all Blacks by setting the stage for such violence and thereby justifying more police over-reaction. As for those who assume that every such shoot-out is an attack on their "brother," that is such a sad commentary on how our society is deteriorating.

What is really disturbing is that money was found to help businesses reopen and to help Darren Wilson to relocate, but not to help Michael Brown's friend to stay in college. In the end, there can be no forward movement in places like Ferguson without educational, vocational, and economic opportunity for the people of color who live there.

Ted Cruz will return donation from Council of Conservative Citizens president Earl Holt, who FEC shows also gave to 2016 hopefuls Santorum, Paul and more
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While I am glad to see that Republicans are willing to return money from such an avowed racist, it bothers me that they don't seem to be wondering why racists are donating to their campaigns. Perhaps the question that really needs addressing is, "has the Republican party become the party of racism and division in America?" What a sad commentary on the party of Lincoln, TR, and Eisenhower.

Video: White Cop Grabs Black Tween by Her Neck—And Slams Her Against His Squad Car

Video: White Cop Grabs Black Tween by Her Neck—And Slams Her Against His Squad Car | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The police say they were just doing their jobs—and besides, the 12-year-old attacked them. But a 911 call by a pool employee reveals concerns over race.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If the manager of a public pool can't deal with a kid jumping into the pool with clothes on without calling the police, if the police can't deal with such a situation without it escalating into this kind of excessive force, then there is something very wrong. So when the original call is a 911 and mentions race, I think that should worry us. Clearly, this wasn't about one kid acting like a jerky kid. Clearly, it wasn't about an adult who perhaps didn't offer the correct amount of supervision to the kids she brought to the pool. It was about somebody overreacting and the police getting caught up in that reaction instead of providing the kind of leveling wisdom we'd like our cops to provide.

This is the institutionalized racism that haunts America. Protesters, police clash at Ethiopian Israeli demo against police brutality - National

Protesters, police clash at Ethiopian Israeli demo against police brutality - National | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The protest was prompted by a video of a police assault against an Ethiopian Israeli soldier; 10 protesters and three police officers receive medical treatment.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Israel has yet to come to terms with the racism of European Judaism, which has never acknowledged the equality of African Jews. I thought this statement from one of the protesters particularly powerful and hopefully instructive for us in America. "Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat arrived at the scene and spoke to the protesters trying to lower the flames. 'Do you doubt that the prime minister, ministers, and 120 Knesset members want to embrace the Ethiopian community?' Barkat asked a young protester, who responded 'I don't want a hug. Look at me as you would look at a white person. I don't need a hugs. That is a patronizing attitude that says that I'm incapable, so let's give him a hug.'"
