The Trump story media dare not utter: They sacrificed democracy for ratings

The Trump story media dare not utter: They sacrificed democracy for ratings | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Democracy can't survive when media have a sole commitment to profit with little consideration for the public good
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This piece is worth reading if only to get us all thinking about the role of the press in politics. I'm not sure how much the free mentions in the media affect things, but then I don't watch television or listen to much radio, so how would I know. Do you think that the any free mentions of Trump and the few mentions of Clinton and earlier of Sanders had a major effect on what happened this last election cycle? Is the press becoming so concentrated and uninterested in fair coverage as to endanger our democratic system?

Police union: Protesters cheered when car hit officers

Police union: Protesters cheered when car hit officers | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Students walked out of class Wednesday to protest the Ferguson grand jury decision.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Why is this on USA Today? That is the real question. At worst a small group, certainly not a significant one, most likely not even part of the actual demonstration, behaved horribly. BUT that is what the media leads with. How about all those young people standing up for what is right? How about the police department of a major city helping to protect that protest. That isn't the news? Well to me it is. Shame on the way this station reported the story. Shame on U.S.A. Today for it's presentation. Could we have responsible media?

Overview Essay | Freedom House

Overview Essay | Freedom House | Upsetment | Scoop.it

How is press freedom doing all over the world? Not as well as it should be. For example, it has dropped in the U.S. Yep, less freedom of the press here than last time it was assessed.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

IMHO, there is no freedom more important than the freedom of the press. Without a free press there can be neither meaningful discussion or informed electorates. So, how is press freedom doing in the world? Not all that well. This should have us very concerned.

Strange How No One Is Calling Texas Father And Son Murderers Who Shot At Cops ‘White Thugs’, Isn’t It? | FreakOutNation

Strange How No One Is Calling Texas Father And Son Murderers Who Shot At Cops ‘White Thugs’, Isn’t It? | FreakOutNation | Upsetment | Scoop.it

A Texas father and son  face charges in connection with a violent interstate crime spree, in which a North Carolina husband and wife were killed during a home invasion and two police officers were wounded during a shootout, and yet they both lived though the ordeal.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

The issue of racism is often in how people react to the news, and indeed how the news is told. Crazy is a code word for white man with problems who should be taken into custody with care while Thug is usually a code word for black man who is dangerous and should be shot on sight.

House GOP Campaign Arm Created Misleading Fake News Sites

House GOP Campaign Arm Created Misleading Fake News Sites | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The National Republican Campaign Committee has created fake news sites about House candidates, presumably to take advantage of readers who don't pay close attention to what news sources they read, National Journal reported.

Earlier this year, the NRCC got in some trouble for creating deceptive fake campaign sites for Democrats that ask people to contribute in order to help "defeat" the candidate.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Partisan reporting has always been a staple of American politics. However, never before the Internet was it so easy to hide the funding and the bias of a source. My assumption is that if I agree with the vast majority of the material from one source, it is probably skewed. That's why I use so many sources. Do you?
