Pentagon Officers: We Quit if Trump Wins

Pentagon Officers: We Quit if Trump Wins | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The plans of the next president are personal to the officers of the Pentagon, who are threatening to retire if The Donald becomes commander-in-chief.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The Republicans are always saying we should listen to the generals; so let's give some thought to what military leaders think of the GOP contenders. In effect, this article says our military leadership thinks this crop of GOP contenders are clowns. I can go along with that.

Chafee’s absurd comparison on the fiscal impact of the Iraq war and the Bush tax cuts

Chafee’s absurd comparison on the fiscal impact of the Iraq war and the Bush tax cuts | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The former Rhode Island governor earns Four Pinocchios when he falsely compares the Bush tax cuts to the invasion of Iraq.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I like Lincoln Chafee and think he would make an outstanding president, but like all politicians, he has stupidly gone with the hyperbole of numbers instead of the simple truth that he showed good judgement by voting against both the Bush tax cuts and the invasion of Iraq. If a politician feels compelled to use numbers, (s)he should always use a disclaimer with them since the ones that best fit their case are almost always open to debate if not downright disproof.

Supreme Court to Hear Arguments on Judicial Campaign Contributions

Supreme Court to Hear Arguments on Judicial Campaign Contributions | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Case could undo state laws that limit judicial candidates from asking for donations.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Should judges even be elected at all? There are so many of them and the elections are so ignored. What I do know is we don't need more advertising at election time but less. We do need more real debate and discussion and more in depth information about candidates.

Profs Bumble Into Big Legal Trouble After Election Experiment Goes Way Wrong

Profs Bumble Into Big Legal Trouble After Election Experiment Goes Way Wrong | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Political scientists from two of the nation's most highly respected universities, usually impartial observers of political firestorms, now find themselves at the center of an electoral drama with tens of thousands of dollars and the election of two state supreme court justices at stake.

Their research experiment, which involved sending official-looking flyers to 100,000 Montana voters just weeks before Election Day, is now the subject of an official state inquiry that could lead to substantial
Kenneth Weene's insight:

That political science professors from two top universities saw nothing wrong with appropriating the official seal of a state without permission is very troubling. That the good people of Montana complained about this and that this "quasi experiment" is now being investigated is, however, very good news. We get so much junk mail before elections that I have learned to winnow it carefully before taking it into the house. Third party material automatically goes in the garbage unless it is non-partisan, e.g. the League of Women Voters. But this piece might have gotten by me because it appeared to be from the state.

Who's Behind The Whopping Six Figures Being Spent To Oust A Dem State Judge?

Who's Behind The Whopping Six Figures Being Spent To Oust A Dem State Judge? | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A month ago, Missouri GOP prosecutor Brian Stumpe had less than $100 on hand in his campaign to unseat Cole County Circuit Court Judge Patricia Joyce, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Now, just a few weeks later, he has received $100,000 -- all of it funneled into his campaign by a national group, the Republican State Leadership Committee, which has spent a total of $200,000 so far in this race for a single state judgeship.

So just what the heck is going on? Democrats and liberals on t
Kenneth Weene's insight:

When I see this kind of unusual spending on an election campaign to oust a person who has not been the object of any meaningful public criticism and when that money has come from outside and unnamed sources, my reaction is to vote for the incumbent. I certainly hope that the folks in Cole Country, Missouri will make it clear that money is not the determining factor in elections and that spending too much is a questionable practice.

Trump Rally With Sheriff Joe Arpaio Will Be Single Most Anti-Immigrant Event of the Year

Trump Rally With Sheriff Joe Arpaio Will Be Single Most Anti-Immigrant Event of the Year | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Donald Trump will hold a rally in Arizona this weekend with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the Arizona Republic reports, a function that has the potential to set a new high water mark for anti-immigration sentiment verbalized at a single Republican primary event. The gathering was moved from a Phoenix...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I ask my Latino friends to turn out at election time and help turn Arpaio and the Republican party out of office and control here in Arizona. If the Hispanic population of this state ever finds its political will, our community will be a far better place for us all.

Jeb Bush Says 'I Am My Own Man' on Foreign Policy

Jeb Bush Says 'I Am My Own Man' on Foreign Policy | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A 2016 contender looks to move away from previous Presidents Bush
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The Bush family has a long history; suddenly we are being asked to believe this guy is his own man. If so, where are his comments and statements made during his brother's campaign and terms in office? Let's see how independent he actually was. My guess, there is no such record of independent thinking. If not, then in my opinion he has to bear the burden of his family.

Fact check: 2014 campaign whoppers | Upsetment | Scoop.it
No shortage of tall tales in the midterm elections, from both parties.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Wouldn't it be nice if politicians told the truth? Sadly, there are so many lies and distortions. Here are a few from both sides of the aisle.

George F. Will: The nastiest political tactic this year

George F. Will: The nastiest political tactic this year | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The actions of a Democratic district attorney are taking a toll on the belief in government’s legitimacy.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is the kind of political tactic that is abhorrent no matter from what political side it is launched. No district attorney should be allowed to engage in such gangster tactics as Milwaukee Country's John Chisholm. That he is using cover of authority to harass and intimidate the supporters of a candidate he doesn't like is indefensible. This is the kind of political behavior at a state level that demands a federal investigation. Sadly, the candidate whom he has been trying to help, Mary Burke, Democratic candidate for governor, who is worthy of election, can only be tarnished by this lawless behavior.

Here's The Simple Reason Congress Hasn't Fixed The VA

Here's The Simple Reason Congress Hasn't Fixed The VA | Upsetment | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON -- In 2011, a significant chunk of the congressional agenda was taken up by banks and merchants battling over swipe fees -- namely, how much could banks charge Walmart and others to run a debit card. The focus on the penny brawl made no se...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is time to remove lobbyists from the congressional agenda. Why don't we have government funding of elections, clear spending limits, and strict penalties for those offering and receiving gifts, perqs, etc. If we don't clean up Washington and the money game, how can we hope to have responsive government?
