America's newest warship breaks down at sea after 20 days

America's newest warship breaks down at sea after 20 days | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The USS Milwaukee, launched with much fanfare 20 days ago, had to be towed
back to shore after engine problems
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Sadly, nobody can protect us from the incompetence and greed of the military-industrial-espionage complex. America, time to wake up and see that we are often our own enemy.

U.S. Navy warns Congress that piecemeal cruiser upgrades costly

U.S. Navy warns Congress that piecemeal cruiser upgrades costly | Upsetment | Scoop.it
WASHINGTON, April 30 (Reuters) - U.S. Navy Secretary RayMabus on Thursday warned that congressional plans for apiecemeal modernization of 11 cruisers would cost billions ofdollars more than the Navy's
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Why are the members of congress mucking in and trying to  micromanage the Navy. If you read "Queen of the Dew Drop Inne," you might get an idea of how incompetent a bunch this house of representatives really is. That's chapter 3 of the book, and (IMHO) is one of the funnies of the Tales. Meanwhile, as usual the GOP led house is going to cost us hundreds of millions for less result.

More Than 600 Reported Chemical Exposure in Iraq, Pentagon Acknowledges

More Than 600 Reported Chemical Exposure in Iraq, Pentagon Acknowledges | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Defense officials said they failed to recognize the scope of the reports from Americans who served in Iraq, or to offer them adequate care.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is horrifying, not because some of our troops didn't get the treatment they certainly deserved but because of what it implies about the Busch administration lies. If they believed there were weapons of mass destruction, if they believed there was a chemical and biological warfare program in Iraq, why had they not set up any data collection and treatment program for troops who were exposed? Obviously, they knew they had lied. In my opinion, no administration in history has done worse service to us than the Bush crew.

Lockheed Martin’s Herculean effort to profit from defense spending

Lockheed Martin’s Herculean effort to profit from defense spending | Upsetment | Scoop.it
How the defense contractor profited from an aircraft
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Sure we need weapons systems and planes for our military, but too often it is congress and lobbyists who are spending the money. Stop blaming the administration and even the Pentagon and start putting some of the blame where it really belongs, on Senators and Representatives who are being bought into the system.

Pentagon suspends troubled missile defense system at center of 'runaway blimp'

Pentagon suspends troubled missile defense system at center of 'runaway blimp' | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The Pentagon has suspended indefinitely a trial run of the troubled missile defense system called JLENS , whose giant, radar-carrying blimps were intended to help safeguard the skies over Washington.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Meanwhile, Texas Republican Congressman Mac "Thornberry made clear that Republicans still back the system, according to Democratic aides who attended. A spokesman for Thornberry confirmed the exchange." So we have a program that doesn't work, creates hazards, and costs millions, but the GOP don't want to cut it. Fiscal responsibility is obviously not what they are about. Perhaps it's because a blimp is involved and we all know the US military has fewer blimps and hot-air balloons today than it had in 1862. God save us from the GOP.

GOP, Pentagon tussle over East Coast shield

GOP, Pentagon tussle over East Coast shield | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The Pentagon has repeatedly said it doesn’t need — nor can it afford — a third anti-missile battery on American territory to defend against a possible attack from North Korea or Iran. But that hasn’t stopped congressional Republicans, ideologically predisposed to a more comprehensive missile shield than Democrats, from pushing...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

They are cloning the ghost of Ronald Reagan and his star wars defense boondoggle. Then they complain about spending money to help those in real need to escape the cycle of poverty and to have a real piece of the American pie. Wait, you say, those missile defense systems will create jobs; sure but most of tax dollars will end up in the hands of corporations and not in communities. Besides which, and this is the real icing on the cake, these missile defense systems don't work. If you really want to defend the East Coast of America, spend some money getting the inner cities, like Baltimore, Trenton, and Philadelphia, brought up to code—the code of the human heart.

GAO Questions F-35 Sustainment Estimates

GAO Questions F-35 Sustainment Estimates | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Sustainment estimates for the F-35 joint strike fighter may not be realistic and require further study before a plan is finalized, the government's watchdog wrote in a new report.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is the great boondoggle airplane that has already generated billions in overruns. For the most part, the F-35 is the child of congress, generating profits for contributors and investment in districts. I hear people scream about bailing out GM and Chrysler, but the Lockheed-Martin connection, well that is accepted in the name of defense. Bullshit!

Leaked Pentagon Report: The F-35 Won't Stand A Chance In Aerial Combat

Leaked Pentagon Report: The F-35 Won't Stand A Chance In Aerial Combat | Upsetment | Scoop.it
"Flawed beyond redemption."
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Of course we can't cut military and espionage spending in order to continue domestic programs. Why where could we possibly save when our military needs these wonderful weapons? (My sarcasm knows no bounds, but then neither does the hunger of these endless programs and the corporations that push them.)
