A woman fights to save her rhinos armed only with her grandmother's shotgun

A woman fights to save her rhinos armed only with her grandmother's shotgun | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A woman who lost her rhinos to poachers is convinced the international ban on trading horns will send rhinos extinct
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Will making it possible to sell farmed rhino horn help save the rhinoceros from poaching. Proper farming allows the horns to grow back and the horn can then find its way through legal channels to the consumers in China, who evidently still believe in its magical powers. Strange as it seems to me, humans still believe in such magic, especially when it comes to virility. Of course, when we see how much Viagra is sold, it doesn't surprise me that men will pay and pay and take and take to make sure they can impregnate women. The only thing we guys won't do is stop polluting our world. The reality is that sperm counts are going down, and I don't think any number of dead or farmed rhinoceros will offset what we are doing to ourselves. Do you?

This Is How A Species Goes Extinct

This Is How A Species Goes Extinct | Upsetment | Scoop.it
An eerie photo of a pit of frozen pangolins shows just how easy it can be for the planet to lose a species.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Yes, those were once living creatures, the delightful if endangered pangolin. There are some creatures, some who are hardly human,  who traffic in death and who take no heed of the animals and of our responsibility to be stewards of the earth. They think only of their own profit and greed. It is those creatures I would gladly see removed to such a pit and set on fire. If I believed in hell, I would people it with those who have such little appreciation for life and its diversity.

Florida crocodiles: Man-eating Nile beasts confirmed in swamps - BBC News

Florida crocodiles: Man-eating Nile beasts confirmed in swamps - BBC News | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Florida wildlife experts express concern about three man-eating Nile crocodiles found in local swamps, amid fears more may be at large.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
There's an interesting story here, just nobody knows it. I'm wondering if this was an accident or an act of terrorism. Did somebody figure out that making the Everglades more dangerous they could get the government to allow more expansion into the wilderness that is left, to allow more killing of the animals. I don't mean to sound paranoid, but with pythons and man-eating crocs coming to the neighborhood, one has to ask.

Argentina plans to cull 100,000 beavers in Tierra del Fuego - BBC News

Argentina plans to cull 100,000 beavers in Tierra del Fuego - BBC News | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Argentine authorities say they plan to cull the entire population of beavers in Tierra del Fuego.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
More evidence that we humans are not good stewards of the earth, as if we needed more. I do hope they at least figure a use of the pelts of these poor animals. Why is is that so often the great ideas of governments turn out to be mistakes?

Drone flights overhead cause stress for black bears, study says

Drone flights overhead cause stress for black bears, study says | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Drones operated by researchers may have unintended consequences for wildlife, warns the lead author of a new study showing the buzzing of unmanned aerial vehicles overhead can leave black bears stressed, with racing hearts.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is a given in science that the process of studying something has its own effects. Therefore, scientists, especially those studying animals, must have a clear sense of responsibility and take care to not do harm. Drones are not toys but invasive incursions into the environment.

9 Cruel Cases of Animal Abuse That Went Viral - ODDEE

9 Cruel Cases of Animal Abuse That Went Viral - ODDEE | Upsetment | Scoop.it
From the abused pit bull that's getting a second chance at life, to the girl who threatened to kill her chihuahua if One Direction didn't respond to requests to follow her on Twitter, check out 9 cruel cases of animal abuse that caught the media's attention.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If humans must claim dominion over other species, that superiority does not free us from a responsibility to act towards those animals with compassion, ethics, and decency. Sadly, too often some humans fail that simple test of stewardship. Here are 9 examples of human cruelty that have gone viral on the Internet in recent years. While individual instances are upsetting, those which involve zoos are particularly so since zoos are supposedly about protecting animals.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

There is a message here about the brutishness of man and the loneliness of the animals we humans consider ours. How sad and how pathetic. Oh, well, at least this gang of thug-farmers can say their collective pricks were larger than a buffalo's.

Letter calls for cats to be poisoned in Mo. community

Letter calls for cats to be poisoned in Mo. community | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The letter urged residents to put out bowls of antifreeze to kill stray cats.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

In Arizona we have a simple stray cat solution, coyotes. That said, I would not want a neighbor feeding strays and as a result attracting them to my home. However, I certainly wouldn't resort to such a vile counter-measure. If you do feed feral cats, do your neighbors a favor and have those felines spayed and neutered. If you feed them, they become your responsibility. And, don't be surprised when the pack of coyotes or wild dogs come looking for their dinners, too.

The Tragedy of Puppy Mills in the U.S. and How You Can Help by Trish Jackson | The Write Room Blog | Upsetment | Scoop.it

If you love dogs, this is a problem about which you will feel strongly.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

Those who care only about the money should not be allowed to breed dogs. Sure breeders should make a profit, but they should also care about the animals and make sure they are treated humanely.
