A florist caught between faith and discrimination

A florist caught between faith and discrimination | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The decision by a Washington state florist not to provide flowers for a gay couple's wedding has set up an emotional court fight that may shape similar cases in the future.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This is an incredibly sad story of a good person who could not allow herself to bend before the law, at least not when it came to her understanding of her faith. But, when all is said and done, the right of same-sex couples to expect service equal to that given heterosexual couples is the right way for a country that values law and equality.

Washington's deadly betrayal of Iranian rebels

Washington's deadly betrayal of Iranian rebels | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The deaths of Middle Eastern refugees are becoming so commonplace they rarely make it on to the front pages in the United States. However, the deaths of 23 refugees in a rocket attack in Iraq on Oc...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The message is simple, don't trust the United States. You can bleed for us, but that doesn't mean you can trust us. If these Iranians left behind in Iraq aren't enough, consider the Vietnamese left behind, the older children of Filipinos who fought in WW2, the Native Americans still waiting for a decent life.

Washington’s Big China Screw-up

Washington’s Big China Screw-up | Upsetment | Scoop.it
In March alone, France, Italy, Germany, and the United Kingdom have now all agreed to join a major, China-led initiative that could one day rival…
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It is time for the U.S. government and we the people to understand that we are not in charge of the world nor should we try to be. When I was a kid I learned that it was never a good idea to play with a kid who, because he owned the ball, always had to be captain. Sadly, those kids never got it that as soon as the other kids could buy their own ball they would and would not want to be friends anymore. A simple playground lesson lost on Washington.

Hospitality and Gambling Interests Delay Closing of Billion-Dollar Tax Loophole

Hospitality and Gambling Interests Delay Closing of Billion-Dollar Tax Loophole | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Lobbyists recently swooped in to add 54 words to a tax and spending bill of more than 2,000 pages that temporarily preserved a loophole sought by the hotel, restaurant and gambling industries, and billionaire Wall Street investors.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

We get the Congress we deserve if we don't recognize that they will always go with the money. Republican of Democrat, if they aren't ready to put the nation first, they should be out of Washington. The best way to make this happen is through campaign finance reform. Pigs at the trough they are, and we have to stop the flow of corruption into that trough.

House Republicans rebuff D.C. on budget; reproductive law under threat | Upsetment | Scoop.it
House GOP on Wednesday could upend many policies prized by D.C. Democrats.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

In Republican-Land corporations have religious freedom, but individual humans don't have freedom of conscience. And people ask me why I stopped voting for Republicans. I'll make it simple, because—as you know if you read my books—I believe in the importance of human choice and personal freedom.

The 13 reasons Washington is failing

The 13 reasons Washington is failing | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The sooner we recognize that something is wrong with Washington, the sooner we can begin the hard work of fixing it.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I thought this an outstanding piece, maybe not the best and final analysis of the situation, but thought provoking and organized. I do, however, think there three factors that are missing in the list. One, the presence of an apparatchik like J. Edgar Hoover, who knew where all the bodies were buried and traded that knowledge to the president, whoever he was, for protection of his own little fiefdom. The second is the existence of a new bureaucratic power cloaked in national security, which can be used to lead the president around by the nose. Clearly, Mr. Obama has been co-opted by them. Third, is Mr. Obama himself, who became president without first knowing how the system worked. This allowed the opposition to form and harden while he fought brush fires.
As for the system, the question may well be raised if we need a new constitutional convention. The sadder question to be called is are we modern Americans capable of holding one, of rewriting our constitution?
