White supremacists carry torches and chant Nazi slogans at rally in Virginia

White supremacists carry torches and chant Nazi slogans at rally in Virginia | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Hundreds of white supremacists carrying burning torches and chanting Nazi-era slogans rallied in Virginia on Friday night before violently clashing with counter-protesters.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
I know there are far more decent Americans than assholes. Still, there are the haters and they are despicable. I know many of the White supremacists are terrified that they will fall into the chasm of irrelevancy and impotence. However, their way out of that fear and depression is not to rage against other groups but to work towards their own self-improvement, for example through real and useful education. The first part of that education, if it is to really make a difference, is social science including realistic history so  that will help them to understand the tensions of today's society and to understand how the issues of race and income need to be addressed.

Lawyer: Martese Johnson is a respected leader, did not produce fake ID

Lawyer: Martese Johnson is a respected leader, did not produce fake ID | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Martese Johnson’s lawyer described his client as a well-respected leader at the University of Virginia.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Meanwhile on Fox News an all white panel condemned teaching about police violence as part of Black History Month in a Virginia school district. Perhaps it's time for the fools on Faux to shut up and stop spewing their hate, which feeds racism and police violence.

Reginald Latson’s case points to a major problem in U.S. prisons

Reginald Latson’s case points to a major problem in U.S. prisons | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Neli Latson’s case shows that those with mental illness and disabilities don’t get the help they need.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Cases like this are an indictment of our criminal justice system, our mental health system, and worst our values as a nation. While this young man is trapped in the Virginia system, he could as easily be in almost any of our states. Why weren't his needs recognized and the necessary help given when he was a child in school? Why aren't police better trained to deal with people who are intellectually and mentally handicapped? Why isn't the justice system equipped with alternative approaches besides prison incarceration? Why aren't prosecutors encouraged to do the right thing instead of scoring convictions? Why, Why, Why?!

A campus comes together in solidarity with their classmate after he was beaten by police.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Meanwhile, of course, the police have made no admission of anything.  Assuming he had been using a false ID, which he wasn't, how would that justify a police assault?  He was turned away from a business; is that a violation of law? Ultimately, the greater question is what would have happened if this young man's skin had been a different shade. Sadly, most of us know the answer to that question, which is why every police department in the country becomes open to question.

Virginia gov. calls for investigation into student's arrest

Virginia gov. calls for investigation into student's arrest | Upsetment | Scoop.it
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — About 1,000 students gathered at the University of Virginia campus Wednesday night to demand justice for a student who was injured during an arrest and appears in a photo with a bloody face as he is being held down by an officer.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

At least these overly zealous police have brought a greater awareness to the white students at UVA. They now understand that it police brutality towards Blacks is real and present in their community. The real problem is that these individual officers will probably suffer little of consequence. Oh, the young man will get some money, but that won't come from these cops. I applaud the governor for stepping in so quickly.

Dem Gov: 'If It's The Last Thing I Do,' I'm Going To Fight For Medicaid Expansion

Dem Gov: 'If It's The Last Thing I Do,' I'm Going To Fight For Medicaid Expansion | Upsetment | Scoop.it
WISE, Va. (AP) — In his first months on the job, Virginia Gov. Terry McAullife is trying to capitalize on Democrats' takeover of top state offices and the state Senate by pushing a key element of President Barack Obama's health care law through...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If you don't understand that there is a basic difference between the Democrats and Republicans, perhaps this is the place to start rethinking. One side believes that the health and welfare of the citizens is the major concern and the other focuses on keeping taxes lower for the wealthy and corporations.
