Massive Wildfire Engulfs Tennessee Resort Towns, Kills 3 | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The blaze has destroyed more than 150 structures.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
How horrible. Having lived in rural Maine and having fought fires there, I can only imagine the horror of this raging fire. Want to share one of my experiences fighting fires? I used one in writing "Broody New Englander." https://www.amazon.com/Broody-New-Englander-Kenneth-Weene-ebook/dp/B00QCUYK12/ref=asap_bc?ie=UTF8

Tennessee Republicans Want To Shut That Whole Union Thing Down

Tennessee Republicans Want To Shut That Whole Union Thing Down | Upsetment | Scoop.it
This post has been updated.

This week, employees at an auto plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee are voting on whether to form a union.

It’s interesting for a few reasons: Tennessee is a low-union-density state; the Volkswagen plant in question would be the first foreign auto facility to be organized in the South, marking a growth opportunity for the United Auto Workers; and VW itself has taken a neutral-to-positive stance toward the union, citing its positive relations with employee organizations at factories elsewhere in the world.

But the most interesting part of all is the panicked reaction of local Republican politicians, who are scrambling to find ways to attack the organizing effort and deter the formation of a union.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The Republicans can't help themselves. They only know how to make war on the working class and women. They just don't get the idea that individuals and their rights are more important than business. Heck, not even when the business in question agrees with the workers.
If you work for a living, do you really want to vote for people from a party that can't accept your right to organize with your peers?

Inmates say they worked for free for jail officials

Inmates say they worked for free for jail officials | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Inmates can legally be required to work without pay, in some circumstances, but jail employees are not supposed to profit from their labor.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Slavery under cover of authority is still slavery. This is not just a state crime but a violation of federal law. While the perpetrators should be tried in local court, the Justice Department should make its presence and concern clear. There is no greater crime than enslaving others; in some ways it is worse than murder because it implies the worthlessness of a human being.
