Of $5.4 billion pledged for Gaza, only a fraction delivered

Of $5.4 billion pledged for Gaza, only a fraction delivered | Upsetment | Scoop.it
GAZA (Reuters) - Two months after donors pledged $5.4 billion to help rebuild Gaza after the war between Israel and Hamas, Palestinian, U.N. and other officials say barely 2 percent of the money has been
Kenneth Weene's insight:

A sad reality is that the political groups within the Palestinian population are so busy fighting one another that they can and will not do what is necessary for the people. And the other Arab countries are sadly sitting back and waiting.

Hamas leader urges Muslims to defend Jerusalem shrine from 'Israeli seizure'

Hamas leader urges Muslims to defend Jerusalem shrine from 'Israeli seizure' | Upsetment | Scoop.it
DOHA (Reuters) - The leader of the Palestinian group Hamas on Thursday called on Muslims to defend the al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem, saying Israel was trying to seize the site, revered in Islam
Kenneth Weene's insight:

As critical as I am of Israel, this is nothing but rabble rousing by Hamas. There  has been no attempt or plan to take over the mosque. Shame on Hamas, which should be trying to help the Palestinian people find a stable life path.

New Palestinian Town in West Bank Awaits Israel’s Approval for Water

New Palestinian Town in West Bank Awaits Israel’s Approval for Water | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Rawabi, a heralded enterprise in the West Bank, lacks residents more than a year after its first 600 apartments were sold, becoming a cautionary tale about investing in the area.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

There is no more foolish thing Israel can do than to resist the growth of a Palestinian middle class, and such a new, planned community would certainly encourage the growth of that middle class. It is only when people have something worth having that they are willing to fight for the status quo.

Israeli Strike in Gaza Strip Kills 3 Top Hamas Commanders

Israeli Strike in Gaza Strip Kills 3 Top Hamas Commanders | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The strike early Thursday was the most significant blow to the armed wing of Hamas’s leadership since Israel’s Gaza operation began six weeks ago.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Of one thing I am fairly sure: the people of Gaza will not be quelled by killing the Hamas leaders. New leaders will come along, probably even more militant. And more people willing to die for their cause will grow from the sorrow and the rage generated by such killings. This continuing cycle of violence in Gaza is truly madness. Isn't it time for the world community to come together and demand that it stop? Isn't it time for the world community to demand that the superpower most influential in Israel, namely the United States, take some responsibility just as it is time for Russia to take responsibility in Syria?

Even Left-Wing Congressmen Can’t Quit Israel

Even Left-Wing Congressmen Can’t Quit Israel | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Despite grassroots outrage at Operation Protective Edge, left-wing members of the House and Senate won’t criticize Israel’s ongoing incursion into Gaza.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

As the warren of tunnels is being discovered, both those into Israel and those connecting to Egypt, I would expect many politicians want to keep a low profile until the extent of that underground threat has been made clear and it has been eliminated. When Israel discovered or perhaps even stumbled onto that network of threats, the entire situation became much murkier, just as it did when the Israeli's obtained the "iron dome" technology from the U.S.. This is a war and there has been deliberate intensification and instigation on both sides. The result, as in all wars, is the suffering of common people. That the suffering has been one-sided doesn't change that reality. Both sides have to work towards peace or things will only get worse. BOTH SIDES.

Why a Gaza cease-fire could reinforce long-term conflict | Al Jazeera America

Why a Gaza cease-fire could reinforce long-term conflict | Al Jazeera America | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Analysis: Everyone wants the fighting to stop but not necessarily to reintegrate Gaza into a wider peace process
Kenneth Weene's insight:

A thoughtful analysis. In the end for all the words we may offer, the suffering of the Palestinian people is as great a humanitarian crisis as has occurred in modern times. Israel is working its way into pariah status, and those who shoot rockets and kill dumb teenagers will ultimately have their own crazy victory, a reign of evil.

I've Never Seen the Israel / Palestine Conflict Illustrated More Uniquely Than This | Upsetment | Scoop.it
3 minutes | The story shared by Israel and Palestine has been told in several stunning films, but I don't think I've ever seen it told like this.

Gaza's unemployed graduates: between Google and falafel - Al-Monitor: the Pulse of the Middle East

Gaza's unemployed graduates: between Google and falafel - Al-Monitor: the Pulse of the Middle East | Upsetment | Scoop.it
With the unemployment rate steadily on the rise in the Gaza Strip, many college graduates are taking and creating jobs outside their specialty.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If the U.S. and Europe (to say nothing of Israel) want peace and a two state solution, the place to start is encouraging the economic development of Palestine. Unemployed, educated young people are the breeding ground of violence, but give them jobs and stability will come. Why not some high tech businesses? Why not a company to make medicines? Why not a plant to make electronics? We should be encouraging investment in this region.

Video footage indicates killed Palestinian youths posed no threat

Video footage indicates killed Palestinian youths posed no threat | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Evidence from CCTV above office shows alleged fatal shootings of Nadeem Nawara and Mohammad Salameh by Israeli forces
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Terrorism is winning because we are becoming the terrorists, be it the Israeli Army or the American police, violence is becoming the answer rather than the sin.

No, I do not advocate that we all become as Gandhi or Martin Luther King, Jr. We are not capable of that, but we should stop seeing ourselves as making war on what we oppose. We should try to reach understanding before we reach battle.

US Supreme Court to hear Jerusalem passport case | Al Jazeera America

US Supreme Court to hear Jerusalem passport case | Al Jazeera America | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Case prompted by parents of US citizen seeks to list son's place of birth as 'Israel' not 'Jerusalem' on passport
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is one of those moments we can only hope for rationality by the Supreme Court. It may seem like a small thing, a limited personal court case, the reality is that it would pave the way for individual American citizens to force American foreign policy in some awkward and inappropriate directions. Imagine this shoe being on the other foot. A Russian child is born on the Iroquois lands in upstate NY. The child's parents ask that the child's birth certificate says Iroquois Nation instead of New York. Would the U.S. tolerate that infringement of territorial rights? That we don't formally recognize the Palestinian government doesn't mean we don't recognize that these claims exist. And, as the article points out, what about the rights of Arab-American parents whose child is born in Jerusalem?

Israel proposes taking more West Bank land for Jewish settlers

Israel proposes taking more West Bank land for Jewish settlers | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The appropriation of almost 1,000 acres would be the largest in years in the occupied territory.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

1, 000 acres may not seem like a lot, but it is everything to a Palestinian trying to raise olives and to a people who want and deserve a state of their own. Once again, Israel does what it can to avoid meaningful peace.

Hamas Admits Kidnapping Israeli Teens

Hamas Admits Kidnapping Israeli Teens | Upsetment | Scoop.it
"Hamas has no qualms whatsoever about targeting innocent civilians," says Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev
Kenneth Weene's insight:

In effect this Hamas leader has said that his organization is not only responsible for the deaths of these three teens but for te deaths of all the other innocents since, especially those in Gaza. He has justified the Israeli's claims that schools and hospitals may well be cover for militants and weapons. He has justified targeting civilians much as the bombings of Belgium in World War I and the Battle of Britain during WWII justified firebombing by the Allies. In effect, he has given comfort to his people's enemies.

Hamas says Israel must accept Palestinian demands or face long war

Hamas says Israel must accept Palestinian demands or face long war | Upsetment | Scoop.it
By Asma Alsharif and Dan Williams CAIRO/JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Hamas rejected on Saturday as insufficient offers made in Cairo to Palestinian negotiators seeking to end Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip, and raised the possibility of renewed fighting when the current truce expires. Israel said it had also not yet accepted any proposals made in the Egyptian-mediated talks but, like the Palestinians, its envoys would continue attending them on Sunday. Hamas, Gaza's dominant Islamist group, wants an Israeli-Egyptian blockade on the coastal enclave lifted, as well as the establishment of a seaport and airport, as part of any enduring cessation of hostilities with the Jewish state. "Israel must accept the demands of the Palestinian people or face a long war," Osama Hamdan, the head of Hamas's foreign affairs, said on Facebook.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Israel cannot give up security and the Palestinian people cannot give up their freedom and economic self-determination. Both will have to recognize the legitimacy of the other is any peace is to come. A two state solution requires recognition that there are in fact two states, both worthy of respect and of safe borders.

Hamas Agrees to Cease-Fire, But Rockets Keep Flying

Hamas Agrees to Cease-Fire, But Rockets Keep Flying | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The governing authority in the Gaza strip agreed to a ceasefire, but the violence continues
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The reality is that Hamas would fall if it actually tried to clamp down on the militants. The people of Gaza, even those who want peace, cannot live caged by Israel, so the rockets will continue to fly and the tunnels will be dug. And, of course, Israel cannot accept the goal if its destruction as a state. The only solution is creating a viable separate Palestinian state whose people have too much to lose to wage war and to change the mindset of Israel so as to see the future as more important and sacred than the past.

Israel's Iron Dome Gets New Funding as Gaza Fight Intensifies

Israel's Iron Dome Gets New Funding as Gaza Fight Intensifies | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Israel's Iron Dome anti-missile
system has kept the country safe from the hundreds of Hamas rockets flying
toward its major cities from the Gaza Strip. With fighting intensifying,
Congress seems poised to give Israel and one of the United States' largest defense
contractors a jolt of good news: $175 million in new American aid that will
help fund an expansion of the program.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The saddest thing to me is making believe that military expenditures like this are called foreign aid. Whom are we aiding the most? Defense contractors? Hawks in our military? Certainly not the Palestinians and I'm not sure how much better off Israel is for the long run when she becomes less willing to negotiate. Why do I see the U.S. government as being a destabilizing and often terrorist entity in world affairs? Maybe because we are too committed to militarism.

Will the Palestinian Unity Government Survive?

Will the Palestinian Unity Government Survive? | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Fundamental flaws in the Hamas-Fatah reconciliation deal, including disputes over security cooperation with Israel, may lead to the fall of the unity government.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It behooves all sides to work towards creating such a unity government and helping the Palestinian state forward. The efforts of those who would gin up anger and conflict be it through kidnappings or weapons must be resisted. Could the four dead teenagers perhaps become the symbol of a new effort for reconciliation and joint effort? We can always pray.

'A' Jewish State vs. 'The' Jewish State

'A' Jewish State vs. 'The' Jewish State | Upsetment | Scoop.it

A conversation with Foreign Policy's David Rothkopf and former Israeli Ambassador to the U.S. Michael Oren -- on Zionism, the loyalty of American Jews, and the promise of the Promised Land.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

As an American of Jewish background, a critic of much that Israel does, and an intent observer of  international affairs, I found this piece well worth the time to read. Perhaps the best thing about it is that it is a real discussion, not with a sure conclusion as much as a sure invitation to continue discourse.
