ISIL expands in Afghan-Pakistan areas, widening attacks

ISIL expands in Afghan-Pakistan areas, widening attacks | Upsetment | Scoop.it
ISIL expansion poses new challenge for US President Donald Trump, as he vowed to "totally destroy" the rebel group.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
The combination of Islamic militancy and increasing tribal identification make western Pakistan and Afghanistan ever more dangerous for American involvement and for the existence of the national governments in Kabul and Islamabad. More than ever, I support the idea of creating a Pashto state and another smaller state for the Afghan minorities. IMO, only when the Pashto are recognized as a people can the rest of us hope to end the endless militancy and fighting in that region. For one thing, once there is a Pashto nation, my guess is that the militants from Saudi Arabia, Syria, and the like will find themselves unwelcome. I wonder what you think.

Pakistan Sends 30 Migrants Back to Europe

Pakistan Sends 30 Migrants Back to Europe | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The asylum seekers were not allowed to disembark from a chartered plane at an Islamabad airport, officials said, reflecting growing frustration with European countries.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The world is filled with the unwanted. It is difficult to know who is a legitimate refugee and who a terrorist in disguise. It is even more difficult to know who will enrich a country and a culture and who will have a detrimental or at least an unwanted effect. Humanity calls out to us all to resolve this modern mass of migration, to make all countries good places to live and to raise ones children so that people are not forced to flee their homes. It is only when we make the world a safe place for all that it will be a haven for us all.

Saudi request for help in Yemen sparks political crisis in Pakistan | Al Jazeera America

Saudi request for help in Yemen sparks political crisis in Pakistan | Al Jazeera America | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in political crisis over request from Saudi Arabia for military help in Yemen conflict
Kenneth Weene's insight:

With a large Shia population (about 1/5 of the country), Pakistan is also a natural market for Iranian gas and oil. Moreover, China, which backs Pakistan in its disputes with India is trying to create stronger ties with Iran. Now, why would Pakistan want to support Saudi Arabia, especially when the militant Sunni sects found in Saudi Arabia provide the religious/intellectual justifications for the ant-i-government forces that put Islamabad in danger. In the end, my guess that Islamabad will reluctantly join the Saudi's coalition; but this may well spark another round of internal conflict within Pakistan. Not a pretty picture.

Pakistan's Colony of Ex-slaves

Pakistan's Colony of Ex-slaves | Upsetment | Scoop.it
"Free at Last" the story of Azad Nagar, a colony of ex-slaves in Pakistan
Kenneth Weene's insight:

We must recognize that slavery still exists in the modern world. That it is often based on religious and/or ethnic difference, which makes it somehow less offensive to the perpetrators, is proof of how little sense of spiritual values those perpetrators have. That debt, even that of ancestors, can be used to justify such bondage is evidence that a just society must allow all the opportunity to succeed. These brave people deserve the respect and assistance of every person who believes that every human being is entitled to dignity and opportunity.

Taliban Mount Major Assault in Afghanistan

Taliban Mount Major Assault in Afghanistan | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The group has attacked police outposts and government facilities in several districts of northern Helmand Province, sending the police and military officials scrambling to shore up defenses.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I have said it before and I will keep saying it, the war in Afghanistan is a fool's errand. The Pashtun nationalism which underlies the Taliban (along with their commitment to Islam as they understand it) make this a movement that will not go away and cannot be defeated by guns. It can only be dealt with by both recognizing the nationalist aspiration (including those in Pakistan) and by trying to introduce a more moderate interpretation of their faith.

Origins of C.I.A.’s Not-So-Secret Drone War in Pakistan

Origins of C.I.A.’s Not-So-Secret Drone War in Pakistan | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The C.I.A.’s covert drone war in Pakistan began with the 2004 killing of a Pashtun militant, the result of a secret deal that was a turning point in the agency’s fight against terrorism.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I have been saying Pashtun over and over in posts about Afghanistan and Pakistan. Their right to a national homeland has always been the underlying issue.

Pakistani mother arrested for burning daughter alive for ‘honour killing’

Pakistani mother arrested for burning daughter alive for ‘honour killing’ | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A Pakistani woman was arrested on Wednesday after dousing her daughter with kerosene and burning her alive, allegedly because the girl had defied her family to marry a man she was in love with, polic
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Women do not belong to their families; they are not chattel; they should never be seen as disposable property. But then, I am the product of the modern world and not a believer in the barbarism that too often passes itself as religion.

Pakistan gunmen kill 45 on Karachi Ismaili Shia bus - BBC News

Pakistan gunmen kill 45 on Karachi Ismaili Shia bus - BBC News | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Gunmen attack a bus in the Pakistani port city of Karachi, killing at least 45 Ismaili Shia Muslims.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The Ismaili are a peaceful sect. While once quite dominant in Islam, this sub-sect of the Shia who revere the Aga Khan as their spiritual leader. They are very much about the symbolic and allegorical meaning of the Quran  as opposed to the more literal approach of the larger body of the Shia.

India, Pakistan trade gunfire in Kashmir. What happened to the relationship reset? | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Indian and Pakistani soldiers traded fire over the disputed Kashmir border, killing nine and causing thousands to flee. The altercation comes just months after outreach from Indian Prime Minister Modi sparked hopes of a detente.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

It seems every time humans take a step forward towards understanding they manage to jump backward towards hatred. What a sad species we are.

Malala suspects held - Pakistan army

Malala suspects held - Pakistan army | Upsetment | Scoop.it

"The group involved in the attack on Malala Yousafzai has been arrested," army spokesman Gen Asim Bajwa told a news conference on Friday.

He said 10 members of a faction called "Shura", which the army says is part of the Pakistani Taliban (Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP), had been arrested in a joint operation with Pakistan's army, police and intelligence services."

Kenneth Weene's insight:

One of the saddest realities of human society is that when a people  are deprived of autonomy, liberty, and quality of life the most brutal and hateful among them often rise to leadership. While I support the creation of a modern Pashto state in Afghanistan and part of Pakistan, the brutality and repressiveness (especially towards women) of the Taliban must disgust us all. Malala is not just a symbol of the educational rights of young women but of the rights of the Pashto to proper government.

U.S. Drone Hits Pakistan for 2nd Time in 12 Hours

U.S. Drone Hits Pakistan for 2nd Time in 12 Hours | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The strikes were apparently aimed at the Haqqani network, a Taliban-allied faction that until last month held the American soldier Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl hostage.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

One reason for the Bergdahl deal was to free our CIA drone operations against the Haqqani bases. The Haqqani are a smaller group allied with the Taliban, also Pashtun but from a specific clan and under separate leadership. Of course, they, too, were funded and supported by the U.S. when the Soviet Union's forces were in Afghanistan.
