Obamacare repeal could hurt rural areas — a key Trump constituency - The Boston Globe

Obamacare repeal could hurt rural areas — a key Trump constituency - The Boston Globe | Upsetment | Scoop.it
In Nebraska, Kentucky, and even some parts of rural New England, the issues surrounding health care are unique: a lack of competition for marketplace insurance, a population that trends older and poorer, employers who are less likely to provide insurance options, and a ravaging opioid addiction epidemic.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
While the GOP sold the farmers on the idea that the free market was better for them than the "socialist" policies of the Obama administration and the Democrats, they didn't point out that that free market was not going to necessarily help them keep their health insurance, their postal deliveries, their community arts centers, their local colleges, for many their food stamps and their kids' school lunches, their country agricultural agents—a list of the things I see now at risk—or so many other things that have been funded from Washington. In the end, how many of the people who voted for the GOP are going to find out that they shot themselves in the foot? What do you think? Anybody think the average guy in the rural areas will be better off? I want to hear from you, too.

GOP Rep's Office Nixes Obamacare Town Hall Because A Reporter Was Present

GOP Rep's Office Nixes Obamacare Town Hall Because A Reporter Was Present | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Rep. Peter Roskam's (R-IL) office cancelled a meeting with constituents about Obamacare on Wednesday when a staffer for the congressman learned that a reporter was present, according to the Aurora Beacon-News.

Constituent Sandra Alexander told the Beacon-News that she arranged the meeting about the Affordable Care Act with Roskam's staff ahead of time and informed them that she would be bringing along a small group.

But staffers cancelled the meeting before it could begin, ostensibly because there were members of the media present
Kenneth Weene's insight:
How to alienate your voters, but for many Republicans, that just doesn't seem to be an issue. If my congressman ran out of a meeting because the press was there, I'd be asking, "What is this guy hiding?"

Insurers Flout Rule Covering Birth Control, Studies Find

Insurers Flout Rule Covering Birth Control, Studies Find | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Two reports say that failure to follow provisions of the Affordable Care Act had left some women with significant cost barriers to birth control.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

If the proper goal is to reduce the number of abortions and reduce the number of unwanted children, then contraception and education are essential. Insurers cutting corners for short-term financial gain is unacceptable and a good example of the kind of thinking that makes me still support national healthcare. What the insurers are counting on is that if a woman becomes pregnant and has an unwanted child, she is likely to end up leaving her work and therefore her insurance plan and going on Medicaid or at least somebody else's dime.

Glitch in health care law allows employers to offer substandard insurance

Glitch in health care law allows employers to offer substandard insurance | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Some low-cost plans qualify under the law but don’t cover basic benefits such as hospitalization.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Sadly, there will always be those who will game the system for their own gain, and the people who designed the Affordable Care Act certainly wen about building a camel rather than a race horse. Is it better than it was? Yes. Is that good enough? Of course not. Sadly, the next congress will be more GOP and I don't see them correcting flaws.

More Than Half of People Who Got Obamacare Tax Credits Are Represented by GOP

More Than Half of People Who Got Obamacare Tax Credits Are Represented by GOP | Upsetment | Scoop.it
As House Republicans debate how to replace the Affordable Care Act, IRS data shows that many of their constituents benefit from tax credits.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
One of the great mysteries of American politics is why do people so often vote against their own interests. Nowhere has that question been written more glaringly than in the last election, when working class whites and especially those approaching retirement voted strongly for the GOP, not just in the POTUS election but for the congress and local legislatures. This included many who were benefiting from Obamacare and other Democratic supported programs. Why? I think people were so afraid of what might come and who might get the advantage over them that they voted to protect themselves from those mythical strangers be they black, Hispanic, or Muslim. Sorry guys, you have met the enemy and he is standing in your mirror.

How You Could Get Hit With a Surprise Medical Bill

How You Could Get Hit With a Surprise Medical Bill | Upsetment | Scoop.it
An estimated 1 in 3 American adults with private health insurance falls victim to a surprise medical bill every two years.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
We need single payer  insurance in this country. Obamacare is an improvement, but it is not sufficient—ESPECIALLY if you need emergency room care. The last thing you want at those times is to have to worry about finding in-network providers.

800,000 HealthCare.gov users received wrong tax information

800,000 HealthCare.gov users received wrong tax information | Upsetment | Scoop.it

About 800,000 HealthCare.gov customers got the wrong tax information from the government, the Obama administration disclosed Friday, and officials are asking those affected to delay filing their 2014 returns.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

The real woe behind Obamacare and its website is that like way to many things done by the U.S. government, there was too much concern about corporations and maintaining their position instead of meeting the real needs of the country. While the Affordable Care Act is much better than the situation before its passage, we need a simpler system of universal healthcare. If the government provided basic healthcare and then allowed the purchase of additional coverage, such as for private rooms versus double, prime prevention including gym memberships versus basic preventative care, and simply gave healthcare the same priority we give say building a new bomber that won't even do its job properly, it would make lots more sense.

Inside the Fox News spin machine: I fact-checked Megyn Kelly on Obamacare

Inside the Fox News spin machine: I fact-checked Megyn Kelly on Obamacare | Upsetment | Scoop.it
When a guest said Obamacare made him sell his business, I called him for his full story. It was more complicated
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While I do not consider the Affordable Care Act the best way to go forward (prefering a single-payer system), I think that the reporting that has been going on has been way to ideological. This is an example of good reporting as compared to what is done on Fox.
