NIGERIA MARKS 3 YEARS SINCE SCHOOLGIRLS' MASS ABDUCTION

NIGERIA MARKS 3 YEARS SINCE SCHOOLGIRLS' MASS ABDUCTION | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Nigerians on Friday marked three years since the mass abduction of nearly 300 schoolgirls by Boko Haram extremists amid anger that government efforts to negotiate their freedom appear to have stalled.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
The mix of tribalism, militant islam, and social inequity have fueled years of pain for the people of Nigeria. The young women who are being taken to become slaves, mistresses, and for some suicide-bombers represent the very worst that we humans are capable of doing to innocents among us. And, what was the great crime that these girls committed, the offense before Boko Haram's understanding of the will of Allah? It was to, as their parents wished, go to school. IMHO, any man who thinks his god is telling him to stop girls from getting an education has a serious problem with his own penis, which is obviously the only head he has. Much as I try to empathize with the anger of all militant groups and to understand their need for change, I cannot find an ounce of understanding for this kind of cruelty to young women and disregard for their rights to grow up. I know that in the end, the government of Nigeria will have to find some kind of rapprochement with these monsters, but I honestly hope that the final settlement involves a rather large number of castrations among the leaders and those who have perpetrated such crimes. What do you think, should castration be a punishment in some offenses?

Kenneth Weene's insight:

I recall the disaster that was Biafra independence and see in this story not only a reprise of that horror but a central problem of Africa. Tribal identity must give way to national unity for countries to prosper.

Malala: Save My Nigerian Sisters

Malala: Save My Nigerian Sisters | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Boko Haram's extremism and brutal activities are against the teachings of Allah. Islam is a religion of peace, where women are respected and education is valued above all
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This eloquent heroine, young as she is, reminds us of the values which The Prophet brought to the Arab world with Islam. Sadly, the current situation in Nigeria and her own history in Afghanistan remind us of how far from Mohammed's teachings the world of Islam has strayed. Yes, BRING BACK OUR GIRLS, but Muslims all over the world must also learn that respect for life, education, peace, and especially for women are teachings at the core of their prophet's life.

Boko Haram Overruns Nigerian Military Base in Northeast

Boko Haram Overruns Nigerian Military Base in Northeast | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Nigeria's Boko Haram Islamic extremists have overrun a remote military camp in the northeast, leaving 13 soldiers wounded and an unknown number missing, the army said Wednesday.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
In asymmetrical warfare always expect that when your enemy does something that appears to show softening, such as releasing hostages, they are hoping that you will let down your guard. Forget the gallantry of war, in the end it is all about destroying the other side, and never more so than in the asymmetry of internal extremist groups.

Morally, What Does the US Stand for?

Morally, What Does the US Stand for? | Upsetment | Scoop.it
It took three weeks for President Obama to publicly address the crisis of over 250 Nigerian school girls kidnapped on April 14, and to pledge to send modest support. That is 22 days of unfathomable cruelty to vulnerable girls....
Kenneth Weene's insight:

As an American, I take this question very seriously. I do not believe that we should be "democracy's police." That does not mean indifference to the suffering of others, but we have no business charging into situations, especially those which are internal to a sovereign country. It was incumbent on the government of Nigerian to request assistance before it was offered.
What is your opinion?
