Remember the Sand Creek Massacre

Remember the Sand Creek Massacre | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The 1864 murder of 200 innocent Indians is still largely forgotten.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Tomorrow will mark the hundred and fiftieth anniversary of a great American travesty, one of many acts of aggression towards Native American communities. We don't like to think of ourselves as perpetrators of massacres against innocents, but that was how we approached the Indians all over this continent. The very least we can do is to have a remembrance and recognition day and to offer education about the real stories in our schools. Meanwhile, please join with me tomorrow in remembering these martyrs to the Euro-American's greed and racism.

U.S.-Mexico border wreaks havoc on lives of an indigenous desert tribe | Al Jazeera America | Upsetment | Scoop.it
If you are Tohono O’odham and live on the Mexican side, it’s a second-class life
Kenneth Weene's insight:

One of the hardest things for many Americans to understand is that Native Americans are not from some other place. If your ancestors came from England, Ireland, Russia, India, or even by force from Africa, you do not have a sense of being tied to your homeland and therefore of not being willing to move. By the very act of immigration, our ancestors made us neo-local. Not so for the First Peoples of the Americas. Their traditional lands are their home and often the center of their faith. If we would be decent and caring, we must help them to savor life on those traditional lands, to continue as much as possible their tribal traditions, and to have dignity as members of their communities and traditions.

Kenneth Weene's insight:

A true celebration of Native American Heritage Night, the cavalry commits another atrocity. Shame on the police and the security forces. I wonder if there will be a law suit. If I were on the jury, I would certainly be all over the Padres and the city.

The Sequester Hits the Indian Health Service

The Sequester Hits the Indian Health Service | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The budget cuts known as the sequester now threaten basic health care for two million American Indians.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Those who know me know that I am passionate about the evils that have historically been done to Native Americans. Once upon a time "White" America gave them blankets infected with small pox. More recently the U.S. government sprayed many of their lands with Agent Orange. Now another betrayal. Will we never stop this evil towards our brothers and sisters?
