Local AfD leader's Holocaust remarks prompt outrage | News | DW.COM | 18.01.2017 | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Jewish organizations and politicians have expressed horror after Thuringian AfD leader Björn Höcke called for an end to the culture of Shoah remembrance. The timing of his remarks was particularly provocative.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
Just as in the United States decades after the Civil War, there are those in Germany and Italy who want to create "alternative facts" for the Second World War and its atrocities. Usually, such revisionism reflects insecurity as the world changes. In Japan, the growing might of China and aging of Japanese society are sources of angst. In Germany it is the wave of immigration and to some degree in the eastern part of the country a sense that German culture is being sacrificed to Euopeanism. As for America, we know that it has been a combination of both racial and demographic insecurity as well as the failure of many to adapt and become part of new industries as the old decay. Sadly, such revisionism while creating anger and hatred does little to solve problems. It is only when countries decide to actually make themselves better that real security can appear.

Over 300 artists, including from France, Turkey and Brazil, turn in works for competition derided by UNESCO
Kenneth Weene's insight:

While I abhor the denial of the Holocaust and the suffering of millions of Jews, Gypsies, and others, I would be more outraged by the denial of the right of humorists to share their work in this competition just as I abhor efforts by Muslims to suppress cartoons about the Prophet. If we cannot respect the right to laughter, then we are truly in a sorry state.

U.S. Apologizes to Poles Over FBI Chief's' Holocaust Article

U.S. Apologizes to Poles Over FBI Chief's' Holocaust Article | Upsetment | Scoop.it
FBI director James Comey accused Poland of being an accomplice to the Holocaust.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The truth lies, as usual, in the middle. Poland as a country was certainly victimized. Many Poles were forced into camps and were murdered by the Nazis. Many Poles tried to help the Jews who were being hunted by the Germans. AND, many Poles were antisemitic and more than willing to help with the extermination of Jews. Were there more Nazi sympathizers in Poland than say Holland, France, or the other countries that were invaded by the Germans? I honestly don't know for sure, but I would expect so since the Jews were more set apart in Poland than in some of the more Western countries. But overall, the Poles were certainly not the perpetrators and were victims, so I think we can safely say that Director Comey has shown a remarkable lack of judgment and historical knowledge. My question: Why did he feel called upon to write a piece about the Holocaust anyway?

The Holocaust Just Got More Shocking

The Holocaust Just Got More Shocking | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The Germans had vastly more work camps and ghettos than anyone knew.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Why, when the war ended, weren't the Jews and Gypsy's given their own countries carved out of Germany? Yes, I know that most Germans of today weren't alive during the war, but can they honestly say they don't still bear the guilt for those atrocities just as we in the U.S. should bear the guilt for what our ancestors did to Native Americans and to slaves? I strongly believe that even those of us whose ancestors arrived after the Civil War still have guilt, for those streets of gold to which our ancestors immigrated rested on flogged backs and dead Indians.
