U.S. retailers hit as immigration worries weigh on Hispanic spending

U.S. retailers hit as immigration worries weigh on Hispanic spending | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Many U.S. Hispanics are venturing out only to buy essential goods and are cutting back on discretionary spending, worried about possible harassment by immigration or law enforcement officials since the election of U.S. President Donald Trump, according to community groups, research firms and retailers.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
And this story ignores the drop in cross-border shopping which will effect many towns in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and California.

Now to be honest, if I were Hispanic I would probably be hoarding cash in fear that I would have to make some kind of escape when "they" came to round me up. Seriously, isn't that the kind of paranoia that our country is now producing?

This Broody New Englander is really rather disgusted by the nastiness that has become so ingrained in our lives. Let us never forget this warning.

"First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out— Because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me."(Martin Niemöller)

Trump Rally With Sheriff Joe Arpaio Will Be Single Most Anti-Immigrant Event of the Year

Trump Rally With Sheriff Joe Arpaio Will Be Single Most Anti-Immigrant Event of the Year | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Donald Trump will hold a rally in Arizona this weekend with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, the Arizona Republic reports, a function that has the potential to set a new high water mark for anti-immigration sentiment verbalized at a single Republican primary event. The gathering was moved from a Phoenix...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I ask my Latino friends to turn out at election time and help turn Arpaio and the Republican party out of office and control here in Arizona. If the Hispanic population of this state ever finds its political will, our community will be a far better place for us all.

Being white, and a minority, in Georgia - The Boston Globe

Being white, and a minority, in Georgia - The Boston Globe | Upsetment | Scoop.it
This year, in Norcross, Ga. and places like it, resentment has found its voice.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
This is a great description of what is not only happening now in many low-wealth towns but what has happened wave of immigrants after wave of immigrants throughout American history. My grandparents came speaking Yiddish. Others came speaking Italian, German, and Swedish. Some spoke English, but with distinctive accents and jargons. Yes, today we have an influx of Hispanics, but in large part that is fueled by our need for lower wage workers. Some will assimilate, some will leave and go back to South America, and some—sadly—will end up in our jails. Meanwhile, yes, coconuts will replace Dairy Queen and there will be more taco trucks on corners. Is that good or bad?

GOP Pollster: Republicans Have ‘Run Out Of’ White Voters

GOP Pollster: Republicans Have ‘Run Out Of’ White Voters | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Republicans need to dramatically improve their standing with Latino voters or risk becoming a “regional party” of disaffected whites, according to a new study by a GOP pollster.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

The question is not do they need to improve their standing with Hispanic voters but whether they can change their party enough so that Latinos will actually see it as a good place for them. It is one of the worst things about polling in politics that political advisers are working not to get better policy but better demographics. That cannot help governance.
