Som Subedi is stuck in traffic. He's running late to check on one of his flock: a 37-year-old woman who's among scores of newly arrived Bhutanese immigrants he watches over like a worried parent.

It upsets me that Bhutan rejects its Hindu minority. It upsets me more that refuges groups who come in such small numbers to America find themselves so lonely. It makes me wonder if we average Americans do enough to welcome the wayfarers into our communities and our lives. When my grandparents came to America, were they welcomed? Sure, they were not pat of such a tiny diaspora, but were they welcomed by the people who were here? Probably not, and that makes it all the more imperative that I behave better, that I welcome strangers to my land. What about you?

I think this is wishful thinking on the part of the press and perhaps many Indians. There are two things going on, and one of them is definitely the desire for a Hindu state, not necessarily religious but certainly cultural instead of non-sectarian. Second, is a hope for economic growth. However, his secret to date has been to more his state into a better competitive position against other states in India. This model is very much like the model in the U.S., a model in big business has ended up getting all the real benefits as states compete.  As a love of India, I wish Mr. Modi well, but as a realist and skeptic, I wait to see.
