Sheriff Joe Arpaio's Re-Election More Tenuous Than Ever Despite Trump

Sheriff Joe Arpaio's Re-Election More Tenuous Than Ever Despite Trump | Upsetment | Scoop.it

According to a tally by the Arizona Republic, “since Arpaio first took office in 1993, cases involving him or his office have cost taxpayers $142 million in legal expenses, settlements and court awards."

Kenneth Weene's insight:
Is this Arizona county ready to give up its icon for hatred and xenophobia? Will the TEA Party conservatives realize that our taxes are paying the cost of having this buffoon in office? And, of course, will the Trump influence bring out a strong Hispanic vote which can't possibly help this purveyor of pink underwear and green baloney?

Suspected drug smugglers caught on film scaling US-Mexico border fence

Suspected drug smugglers caught on film scaling US-Mexico border fence | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A Mexican journalist captured the video when she spotted two young men with large backpacks climbing the fence in broad daylight, then backtracking
Kenneth Weene's insight:
One thing we know, the boarder patrol was right there and did nothing. That's consistent with my view that law enforcement is often involved in the drug trade. Or possibly the entire thing was staged. One thing I know for sure is that the war on drugs is a total failure.

How Jeff Flake became the Senate’s most unorthodox Republican

How Jeff Flake became the Senate’s most unorthodox Republican | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Once known as a right-wing firebrand, Jeff Flake tries to be a different kind of modern Republican.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I voted for Flake, whom I saw as an honest and decent conservative voice for the senate. Although I was piqued by his failure to follow through on what I saw as a commitment to Gabby Gifford to work towards some rational gun control, he has for the most part surprised me by being fare more than I expected; he has become a voice for reason and even amity in the upper house. I don't think the Democrats will find anyone to beat him in 2018, but of course the Arizona GOP may not want him because he is reasonable. Don't get me wrong, it isn't that I agree with him on social issues, it's that I agree with his approach to the process of government and I trust his character.

Selling Off Apache Holy Land

Selling Off Apache Holy Land | Upsetment | Scoop.it
What motivated Congress to give Oak Flat, a sacred Apache site, to a mining company that will certainly destroy it?
Kenneth Weene's insight:

American history is a study in the dynamic tension between idealism and greed. Sadly, greed is once again on the ascendency. If you ever travel to Globe, AZ or visit the San Carlos reservation, you will quickly realize that the unholy alliance of corporations and government has no concern for values or people but worships money. In the end, when the land is desolate and the people dying, what will money be worth?

The American Nightmare: Debbie Milke Recounts Life on Death Row - SPIEGEL ONLINE

The American Nightmare: Debbie Milke Recounts Life on Death Row - SPIEGEL ONLINE | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Debbie Milke, born in Berlin, was placed in solitary confinement Arizona for 22 years after being falsely convicted of conspiring to kill her son. Following her acquittal, she discusses her experience in prison and a life destroyed by a miscarriage of justice.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Sometimes the abuse of power by police (and courts) is so egregious as to warrant real and severe consequences. If Armando Seldate and Cheryl Hendrix are still alive, I hope they spend the rest of their lives in the agony they so completely deserve. As for compensation from the State of Arizona and the City of Phoenix, I can only say that this woman should have the funds to live however she wants, wherever she wants, and with whatever conveniences and services she desires. We as a community owe her big-time. This was not a mistake; it wasn't even a miscarriage of justice; it was a travesty and a dishonor to us all.

Sheriff Arpaio admits to crimes in order to avoid trial. Victims: 'This won't fly' /UPDATE | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Yes I'm guilty. Can we move on now?

Very quietly this week, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio's attorneys filed papers admitting that the ...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Mr Arpaio needs to be removed from office and sued by the taxpayers of Maricopa  County for the costs he has created by his illegal and bigoted behaviors. Then, he should be ridden out of town. I don;t know who'd want him, perhaps the Taliban; I understand they like dumb.

In Arizona, a Textbook Fuels a Broader Dispute Over Sex Education

In Arizona, a Textbook Fuels a Broader Dispute Over Sex Education | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The board in Gilbert, Ariz., said two pages in a biology textbook that discuss sexually transmitted diseases and contraception violated a state law passed in 2012.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Boy, do I resent those who want to force their religious agendas on the rest of us. That is a sin to me. So I want the history books to redact all mention of those who oppose abortion and those who oppose a woman's right to choose. Seems like the same logic as these idiots wanting to censor science books. Meanwhile, I keep wanting to know how many of these religious extremists supported wars, how many oppose foreign aid, and how many are against taxes to provide welfare. In my opinion, Jesus will have a special place for them — in the hell of continuous judgement. And no, I don't like abortions; nobody does. Of course if we deny good science and sex education to our children, we are going to have more unwanted and dangerous pregnancies, but do these self-righteous idiots really care about that?

Arizona Supreme Court to hear appeal on Medicaid

Arizona Supreme Court to hear appeal on Medicaid | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The Arizona Supreme Court has agreed to decide whether conservative Republican legislators may challenge Gov. Jan Brewer's expansion of Medicaid health care coverage for low-income people.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Once again Governor Brewer has taken the compassionate and moderate position compared to the extreme wing of her party. Congratulations Governor in doing what is right.

Coaxing Fire and Police Staffs in Arizona to Cut Own Pensions

Coaxing Fire and Police Staffs in Arizona to Cut Own Pensions | Upsetment | Scoop.it
With many pension plans for the state’s police officers and firefighters underfunded, the firefighter association’s leader says his group must protect the public from financial ruin.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

This is one of those conservative idea wolves in responsible citizen sheep clothing. Do cities and other levels of government need to renegotiate their pension plans to stay solvent? Sure along with raising taxes to pay those obligations and not allowing pension funds to be raided by either the government or corporations that "manage them." However, let's be aware that many workers, especially fire and police, put themselves at incredible risk and often have careers cut short by injury, etc. Perhaps we should as a country begin adding to the Social Security taxes of high income earners to offset some of these public pensions for states , counties, and municipalities.

Oh, Mr. Jeffries has made a small political career out of challenging pensions of others and he has supported conservative, anti-tax candidates. I have to wonder if this position is actually his own unique thinking or if he has been receiving some kind of inducement from ALEC or the like. The Times should be looking at those questions before running this piece without.

America’s Only Pot Researcher Fired Before She Could Help Vets

America’s Only Pot Researcher Fired Before She Could Help Vets | Upsetment | Scoop.it
After years of trying, Dr. Sue Sisley got approval for a groundbreaking study of marijuana as a treatment for PTSD. Three months later, she was out of a job.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Once again Arizona's Republican politicians show they are more concerned with kowtowing to their right wing base than they are in doing the right thing, even when that right thing is proper research designed to help veterans. I have said this before and I will keep saying it: If we want intelligent government in Arizona, we have to stop giving the GOP the reins.

McCain still supports Trump, despite concern about foreign policy skills - The Boston Globe | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The 2008 GOP nominee also criticized presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
Kenneth Weene's insight:
The poor SOB has no choice. Having given us the Painful Palin Experience, he has no credibility left. He can only hope to ride the coattails of the angry and the racist. And I can only hope that the large Mexican-American and Native American populations of Arizona will join people like myself in voting Mr. McCain's retirement from politics. It is well past due.

A dog explains why Phoenix's pet store law is such a big win for shelter animals. | Upsetment | Scoop.it
This dog is adorable and so articulate!
Kenneth Weene's insight:

I find this an abhorrent law. While I am all for adopting shelter animals and strongly advocate spaying and neutering programs, this law is a politically motivated restriction on trade. I want to get rid of puppy mills, too; so let's make trafficking in puppy-mill bred dogs illegal. Let's define what that abuse of animals actual constitutes. But there are many good breeders and many pet lovers who want particular breeds. Over the years I have had both shelter and breeder dogs; they were all loved and lovable. It fascinates me that this kind of restrictive law is pushed by the Republican party in a state so committed to its Libertarian past. Is this really about dogs and animal welfare? Nope, it's about the "We're animal lovers," pose of political righties like Joe Arpaio, who know that this will play well with their uninformed base.

The Power Plant Fueling America's Drought

The Power Plant Fueling America's Drought | Upsetment | Scoop.it
The Navajo Generating Plant powers pumps that push trillions of gallons of water out of the Colorado River and send it shooting over mountains and through canals to cities like Phoenix and Tucson. It's also an environmental disaster.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

A very disturbing review of the history of one of Arizona's biggest mistakes. If we must keep moving that water, perhaps it's time to build nuclear plant. More importantly, we have to stop wasting water, which includes the waste built into poor infrastructure. If we keep kicking the can down the road, we may find that we have run out of road.

It is a matter of personal concern for me that Phoenix has now slipped into the bottom ten places for air quality in America. It is important that all Americans have clean air and clean water.

Arizona Wants Doctors to Tell Patients that Abortions Can Be “Reversed”

Arizona Wants Doctors to Tell Patients that Abortions Can Be “Reversed” | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Doctors in Arizona might soon be required to tell women that abortions can be "reversed." As the Washington Post reports, the Arizona legislature just passed a bill that is the latest in state-based attempts to ban women from using their own health insurance to pay for abortion. What makes this bill...
Kenneth Weene's insight:

In Arizona, we are living in an asylum where the madness is called the Republican party. If this isn't enough for the women of this state (and all the rational men) to vote these bums out, I don't know what will be. The worst part is that when some woman falls prey to this deception and hasn't taken the second medication and it leads to severe complications for her health and this douche bag and his cohort will have not a scintilla of responsibility.

Lawmaker bungles immigration facts at town hall meeting

Lawmaker bungles immigration facts at town hall meeting | Upsetment | Scoop.it
Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) earns Four Pinocchios for misleading his constituents on immigration issues.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

In addition to all the criticisms of Rep Gosar's erroneous statements that are given in this argument, the Social Security taxes paid by these people could only be claimed if they were not using a phony Social Security number for employment. If they try to claim those payments, they will be in effect pleading guilty to the felony of filing false documents, which would make them then eligible for deportation. Interestingly, if you go north in Arizona, you find lots of anti-Mexican prejudice and relatively few Hispanics. Of course you find lots of idiots, but that's another matter; we have them everywhere.

Arizona Law on Immigrant Smuggling Is Struck Down

Arizona Law on Immigrant Smuggling Is Struck Down | Upsetment | Scoop.it
A federal district county judge ruled that the law, which allowed a sheriff to target immigrants, was trumped by federal statutes.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Much as I love Arizona, I detest the mean-spirited anger towards Mexican and other immigrant populations. Not just towards those who do not have proper documents and who should not be allowed to stay but towards the hardworking and decent folks who provide much of the labor we need done and even towards those who are professionals and mainstays of our community. Worse, the state has turned a blind eye to those who encourage the undocumented from coming here, the business owners who take advantage of the most needy and those most desperate to work. Stiffen the penalties for employing undocumented workers and the problem will disappear.

Intelligence Gap: How a Chinese National Gained Access to Arizona’s Terror Center | Upsetment | Scoop.it
An un-vetted computer engineer plugged into law enforcement networks and a database of 5 million Arizona drivers in a possible breach that was kept secret for years.
Kenneth Weene's insight:

Yet another example of how government bureaucracy works more to grow and defend itself than to serve the people. There is a glaring absence of oversight which is cloaked behind the supposed respect for privacy and the legal need to not comment on ongoing investigations. How about the even great need for government transparency?

Kenneth Weene's insight:

How a politician can make a total ass of himself. He is so sure of what he knows that he has no capacity to see reality. So the YMCA camp kids were obviously not happy because he needed unhappy kids to make his point. What a putz. And by the way, the problem is not abrogation of the rule of law but trying to follow a law which was passed almost unanimously and which may have some bad consequences.
