American Schools Are Failing Nonconformist Kids. Here’s How

American Schools Are Failing Nonconformist Kids. Here’s How | up2-21 | Scoop.it
Self-regulation is the new ideal for American school children. It does away with traditional discipline and encourages students to control their own impulses. But it turns out kids may be better off when they're allowed to act their age.

Ashley Bartolowits's comment, November 16, 2013 5:45 PM
This article is really applicable to me and my family; my little brother was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia a few years ago. He and my parents have been struggling with finding the balance of what he is really capable of and what they think he is capable of base on their perception of what the diagnosis mean. They have also had issues working with the school and finding ways that he can succeed in the classroom and dealing with the stigma of spending a portion of his time in the special ed. classroom. They decided this year to take things into their own hands and home-school him. This hasn't solved all the issues, but it has allowed them to center learning activities around his pace and to develop activities that compliment his learning styles.

Oh geez Ashley, good for your parents! It is a tough thing they have chosen to do, and I admire them for it.
Brix Hahn's comment, December 19, 2013 11:56 PM
I think occupational therapy is both great and horrible. I think it really just depends on the family and how much support the child is going to get outside of the training and how understanding his or her teachers are going to be throughout the process.
