Technology is Rewiring Your Brain

Technology is Rewiring Your Brain | Unplug | Scoop.it
Scientists say our ability to focus is being undermined by bursts of information from e-mail and other interruptions.

Via Ana Cristina Pratas
Susan Taylor's insight:

A few years ago, Kord Campbell missed the email of his life -- for 12 days.  How did this happen?  Through an electronic flood of email, IM, chats and web browers, it simply slipped through the cracks.

Campbell managed to save his million dollar deal, "yet continues to struggle with the effects of the deluge of data. Even after he unplugs, he craves the stimulation he gets from his electronic gadgets. He forgets things like dinner plans, and he has trouble focusing on his family."

This is our brain in the Digital Age.

Generally, our ability to focus is being undermined by never-ending bits of information coming at us 24/7.  Information overload, multitasking, interruptions and constant distraction hampers work and family life.

"Nonstop interactivity is  one of the most significant shifts ever in the human environment."  The bottom line?  Technology is rewiring our brains, exposing us "to an environment that asks our brains to do things we weren’t necessarily evolved to do.  We know already there are consequences.”

We are at a moment of dramatic change.

The greatest threat?  "Heavy technology use diminishes empathy by limiting how much people engage with one another -- even in the same room.  That empathy is essential to the human condition."

In an age that supposedly keeps us more connected, we are in fact becoming more fragmented. The human condition -- the unique features of being human -- is becoming more fragile.

The second one reminded me of an advertisement where the boy says he has never seen anything like it during his nine years on the planet. Perhaps not so slowly, the world is becoming virtual and there is no history, no nature, no relationships to savour and enjoy.

Can we break free from the fear of missing out? (FoMO)

Can we break free from the fear of missing out? (FoMO) | Unplug | Scoop.it
The fear of missing out haunts our social networks and our real lives alike. But there is a way to break free

"Of course, that sense of missing out is nothing new. An entire body of literature describes the heart-wrenching conflict between romantic aspirations and social conservatism."

craig daniels's insight:

Fear of missing out (FoMO) is not as we might think a new affliction that has bounded onto the stage paired with social media and the rise of technology. FoMO has been with us as long as we have been conscious.

We are however seeing it manifest itself publicly like never before as more and more of us are tethered to our phones and tablets 24/7. Are there routes we can take to get off this highway of distraction?

Jacob Burak has written a  post that deeply looks at FoMO both currently and throughout history. The post is a good place to start your own journey of understanding Fear of Missing Out.

This well written post ends with some words from Ralph Waldo Emerson that might strike the right chord: ‘For everything you have missed, you have gained something else, and for everything you gain, you lose something else.’
