One View on Unplugging

One View on Unplugging | Unplug | Scoop.it

"in this day and age of always being connected, i swear all of this modern technology gets in the way of our living!  on a few occasions at the park, i’ve noticed someone pushing their child on the swing while being totally checked out and staring at their mobile device. and all i can think is, goodness i am so close to becoming that person.   between texting, social media apps, reading and responding to comments and questions on said social media apps, checking email, updating the ical… it’s like, well of course we are glued to this thing 24/7.  and also, how sad."

craig daniels's insight:

Unplugging may be easier if you have someone to do it with, someone to take walks or just sit and talk to.Finding ourselves alone on the day we have planned to unplug just might open up a stream of anxiety in some.So if you are new to unplugging but really want to try it call a friend and do it together a few times before stepping out on your own.

Smartphone Mindfulness Challenge: What Will You Miss in 48 Hours?

Smartphone Mindfulness Challenge: What Will You Miss in 48 Hours? | Unplug | Scoop.it
I originally purchased a smartphone years ago because my boss at the time would always be one step ahead of me when we were traveling. She wanted to discuss things with me that she had just seen on email.
craig daniels's insight:

It's the buzz, right?  We seem to have a need to be connected all the time to the buzz, and doesn't even matter if the buzz is inane, does it?

Give Unplugging a try, even for just an hour or two. Put tech away for a little while and maybe head outdoors for a quiet walk. I know for me and maybe for you walking can be a life enriching experience even in a noisy city. Give it a try, you'll like it.

The Disease of Being Busy

The Disease of Being Busy | Unplug | Scoop.it
Our overscheduled lives leave little time for contemplation and reflection. How do we enable each other to pause and reflect together and ask how our hearts are doing?
craig daniels's insight:

It's almost impossible to not get caught in the distraction trap. Everywhere we turn something is waving at us, something is pleading for our attention and focus.

Take a moment (yes I'm waving for your attention) to read this post, you'll be glad you did.

Expand Each Moment - Embracing Silence

Expand Each Moment - Embracing Silence | Unplug | Scoop.it
Between each thought in our mind is space and moment, We can expand that space, expand that moment by Embracing Silence.
craig daniels's insight:

Our minds are a jumble of images and ideas that seem at times to flow with the force of water cascading forth at a dizzily high waterfall.

We've forgotten how beneficial setting aside time for silence can be not only for ourselves but also for our friends, family and for our work as well.

'End of Absence': Author says technology is threatening introspection

'End of Absence': Author says technology is threatening introspection | Unplug | Scoop.it
Michael Harris' epiphany came when, as a writer at Vancouver Magazine, he looked at his computer screen and saw 14 open windows while his smartphone was buzzing almost nonstop. What attention he had left was bouncing back and forth between the two. In that moment, he says, he realized he was everywhere and nowhere at once.

If we want to show other it's more then ok to unplug than adults need to start setting the example for future generations.Let's all unplug more and become an example to those around us.

Getting that balance need not be something we only wish for, take 5 minutes every 90 minutes or so to close your eyes and breathe deeply. Fall this mini routine for a week and I think you'll agree that more energy and better focus will come your way.
