Have You Forgotten Your Ability to Single-Task ?

Have You Forgotten Your Ability to Single-Task ? | Unplug | Scoop.it

"I do multi-task some things very well.  If one of the things is completely mindless…ordinarily housework of some kind or exercise…then I can do it and write the next scene of my book in my head or plan a blog post or do any other thoughtful task."

craig daniels's insight:

If the question were asked, have you Forgotten Your Ability To Single-Task I suspect most people would give me bland stare.

Our world is about Multi-Tasking not Single-Tasking, it's about appearing frantic not appearing calm. Writing in her blog Elizabeth S. Craig shares a few of her recent mishaps that got her thinking about single-tasking and how easy it is to forget that skill.

Can emphasis on multi-tasking diminish our ability to single-task, Elizabeth thinks is can, read the rest of her post for some good insight with some delightful humor.

When Planning is Planning to Fail - A Case for Creativity Off the Cliff

When Planning is Planning to Fail - A Case for Creativity Off the Cliff | Unplug | Scoop.it
"The job -- as well as the plight, and the unexpected joy -- of the artist is to embrace uncertainty, to be sharpened and honed by it."

"
J Ruth Kelly's insight:

In the writing life (and often in general daily living) Ironing out our plans turns out to be a creativity killer. Dani Shapiro tells her own story of writing and how it's not about certainties as much as it's about embracing uncertainty, leaping into the unknown in order to birth great things.

Hard work combined with...

1. focus

2. diligence

3. integrity

4. honesty

5. optimism

6. courage...

"just might produce something good" says Shapiro. Whether writing, unplugging or recharging your life, story after story reveals more about grit and less about talent, more about creativity and less about planning.

Finding Balance with Extended Reading, Writing and Thinking Time

"The brain is constantly changing and rewiring itself based on the stimulus it receives; in neuroscience, we call this "brain plasticity." As you read each word of this blog, the neural networks of your brain are active in response to the words, as well as the white noise of the air conditioning, the voices next door, the tempting smell of that banana, and the countless other stimuli in the room around you."

craig daniels's insight:

Our focus is derailed by our own minds squirting dopamine at every opportunity and perceived threat that comes along.

Practicing attention and focus will teach our brain that we want to read and write longer without giving into distractions.

Writer’s Block and the Fine Art of Procrastination

Writer’s Block and the Fine Art of Procrastination | Unplug | Scoop.it

"One of the first expedients of the professional writer that Isabella had learned from me was the art of procrastination. Every veteran in the trade knows that any activity, from sharpening a pencil to cataloguing daydreams had precedence over sitting down at one’s desk and squeezing one's brain"
