Charles Darwin Doesn't Want You to #UNPLUG

Charles Darwin Doesn't Want You to #UNPLUG | Unplug | Scoop.it
If you’re like most Americans, you probably spent most of the long Fourth of July weekend hanging out at a family BBQ, watching baseball, enjoying the fireworks and… obsessively checking your digital devices for the latest news from your friends, followers and assorted other virtual acquaintances ...
Susan Taylor's insight:

Is it possible that the overuse of smartphones, laptops, pads and tablets could be good for you?

No...unless you take a "survival of the fittest" view of the world.  If so, to UNPLUG "may be one of the most dangerous ideas" you've ever considered.

Unplug, Disconnect & Relax

Unplug, Disconnect & Relax | Unplug | Scoop.it
These days technology is all pervasive, unavoidable even, and we are grateful. It has made it simple to get things done from anywhere in the world. It is hard to imagine going back to the way things were before smartphones.
Susan Taylor's insight:

It would indeed be hard to imagine going back to a life before smartphones.  A life with fewer distractions.  A time when text and Twitter alerts did not even exist.

Expedia suggests we all need to take a break once in awhile "to stay healthy, take stock of our life, and reconnect to the present." And they've created an infographic to help us remember to disconnect and relax -- especially during the holidays.

Ditch the Facebook and Go To Nepal

Ditch the Facebook and Go To Nepal | Unplug | Scoop.it
"I’m done with daily hustle, I’m tired of social media", this is something many of us feel. Those who were born before or 90’s know the best of life, not having these nicer means. Phone calls by...
Susan Taylor's insight:

Are you fed up with the daily hustle?  Are you tired of social media?  If you've forgotten -- or never experienced -- life without smartphones and Facebook, then ditch the Facebook and go to Nepal.

Have luxurious candle light dinners -- every night!  Enjoy long chats with your family; play with your kids; get to know yourself.  Meditate.  Breathe.  Bask in the fresh mountain air.  Experience life without electricity.  Take all the time you need -- to just "be".

If you're constantly opening apps or "you go to your browser for other reasons and type in the Facebook or Twitter URL; then it is definitely time for you to come to Nepal."

Off The Grid: One Family’s Costa Rica Adventures

Off The Grid: One Family’s Costa Rica Adventures | Unplug | Scoop.it

"We are a family of adventurers – with teen and pre-teen boys, relaxation is defined as that time in between adventures, solely there to recover and move on to the next activity."

craig daniels's insight:

Off The Grid and into an unspoiled adventure brings this family closer together.

Think about how hard it can be to spend quality time with family or friends? It's not as impossible as it may seem, one trick is to lower distractions and get off the grid.

Ask your family or friends how much time you can set aside and then decide on a destination. Maybe you only have one day or maybe you have ten days, the important part is getting off the grid and into a new adventure with your family or best friends.

Digital Detox Holidays -- The Latest Trend?

Digital Detox Holidays -- The Latest Trend? | Unplug | Scoop.it
Digital detox holidays are the latest trend for technology addicts, and hotels are even offering discounts as incentives.
Susan Taylor's insight:

We saw it in Huffington Post this year -- Arianna committing to a digitally detoxed holiday.  We read about it in the New York Times and the Wall Stree Journal.  We see blogs and articles on occasion, suggesting there is a necessity to take vacations off the grid.  Are digital detox holidays the latest trend?

According to Rachel Quigley, yes.  So "if you are one of those people who feel naked without your smartphone, it's time to listen up."

All around the world, hotels are beginning to see an increased number of people seeking a repreive from busy, technology-filled lives.  So much so that incentives and discounts are being offered.  Travellers need to commit to leave all digital devices at home or check them in at the front desk for the duration of their stay.  Upon doing so, vacationers "are rewarded with extra amenities, freebies or discounts of up to 20 percent".

So as you consider your next vacation, will you choose an unplugged holiday?

Truly Unplug & Leave Your Work Behind

Truly Unplug & Leave Your Work Behind | Unplug | Scoop.it
If you’re getting ready to go on vacation for the holidays, are you planning to truly disconnect from work or do you expect to get roped into work calls and emails while you’re away?
Susan Taylor's insight:

Getting ready for that holiday vacation?  How will you spend it?  Disconnected from work or roped into calls and emails?  Alison Green shares with us some great tips on how to truly unplug and leave your work behind.

  1. Plan your vacation well in advance, completing as much as possible beforehand to help avoid any stress over work "pile-up".
  2. Give people plenty of notice before you leave.
  3. Give your contact information to one person who will act as your gatekeeper.
  4. Set up an informative out-of-office message to inform people you are on vacation.
  5. Take your email off your phone.
  6. Resist the temptation to check-in with the office.
  7. If you really can't unplug completely, set boundaries with your office.

Vacation Deprivation

Vacation Deprivation | Unplug | Scoop.it
Americans given 14 days off and take 10, leave twice as many days unused as last year; French take all 30 available days while also feeling most vacation-deprived.

Via Andrea Rossi, Roland Schegg
Susan Taylor's insight:

Vacation deprivation?  Until today, I had never heard of such a thing.

Yet a recent study by Expedia reveals stark global disparity in work-life balance.

Here are some of the findings:

  • Americans treat vacations as a luxury rather than a right. Over the past year, Americans were afforded 14 days of vacation and took 10, leaving 4 days on the table, twice as many as the year prior.
  • The French lead the world in vacationing, taking all 30 possible days available to them. At the same time, a full 90% of employed French adults either strongly or somewhat agree with the sentence, "I feel vacation deprived," well above the global average.
  • Norwegians, by a wide margin, feel no such thing: only 17% of Norwegians describe feeling vacation-deprived.
  • The Japanese are given a relatively robust 18 vacation days (the global average is 20); they only take 7. At 7 days taken, Japan joins South Korea as the most vacation-deprived nations in the study.

What are your vacation habits?  Do you feel vacation-deprived?
