A Lesson from Nature: Silence is Golden

A Lesson from Nature: Silence is Golden | Unplug | Scoop.it
Susan Taylor's insight:

City living does not truly allow you to escape the sounds that fill your your day.  Many of us have accepted a life overwhelmed with work, stress, electronic devices and social media.  Because of this, both adults and children have become disconnected from Nature.

It seems we have become so entwined with technology that "we fail to reap the benefits of simply playing in a neighbor’s yard, or at the local park, let alone the beauty and wonder of the great outdoors".

Mother Nature brings us many gifts, including the gift of silence.  And silence can be healing -- an opportunity to take in the quiet and listen to the world as it was meant to be while at the same time, releasing all the nagging troubles of the world.

As one way to unplug, go out into Nature and bask in quietude.  Reconnect your body, mind and soul and feel whole and alive once again.

Capitalism Encourages Unplugging Using Advertisements

Nothing can spark passion, build character, and bring people together like sports can. There's nothing like the gift of sport. Sports Authority All Things Sp...
craig daniels's insight:

They are seeing their turf threatened so now Capitalism Encourages Unplugging in order to stay relevant.

The Sports Authority sends a message that people need to unplug and get outside where teams, friends and fun can be found taking part in sports. Companies know if they don't get out in front of it now they will lose sales.

In the near future we will see more and more of these commercials as technology keeps more and more of us sitting in our seats and not spending time outdoors or running the courts at a gym.

I can see challenges being born and lines drawn between companies that want you outside and companies that want you inside.

Mindfulness on the Move

Mindfulness on the Move | Unplug | Scoop.it
Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention on the present. When you're mindful, you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance, without judging them good or bad.
Susan Taylor's insight:

Reap some of the same benefits you obtain from your mindfulness practice by taking it to the street.

Some great tips on how to make your next mindfulness meditation walk work for you:

  • Understand why you are choosing to walk (vs. still meditation)
  • Dress appropriately
  • Set aside enough time
  • Choose or plan your course
  • Be patient - not perfect
  • Walk at a slow pace -- consciously stepping heel to toe -- paying attention to the dirt, (street, gravel) below your feet
  • Focus on your breath
  • After some time, shift your focus to that of your 6 senses
  • After some time, shift your focus to that of your current purpose
  • After the walk, take some time to reflect on and consider your experience before moving on to other activity

Here Comes The Sun With Happiness

Here Comes The Sun With Happiness | Unplug | Scoop.it
Are sunny skies overhead the key to a sunny disposition? New research from the United Arab Emirates shows a strong link between positive moods and time spent outdoors in sunlight.
craig daniels's insight:

Unless you're a vampire you probably already know you feel better on a sunny day. Oh sure sometimes it's the rain that makes you smile, but for most of us it's the sun.

Here's a new study that shows that the sun is even stronger than many of us thought when it comes to our mood and depression.

As if we needed an excuse to get outside for a daily walk on our favorite hiking trail. So unplug your technology and head outside everyday for some fresh air and sunshine, you'll think clearer, get along with people better and your reflexes will be faster when you do play a video game.
