Gratitude for Great Gobs of Human Wonder

Gratitude for Great Gobs of Human Wonder | Unplug | Scoop.it
...
J Ruth Kelly's insight:

What do you cling to for a renewal of thankfulness? How does gratitude blossom within you? Is it like the sweet flow of water over a blessed baby's head?

Shavawn M. Berry reflects beautifully on the Thanksgiving season along side the often disjointed reality of "the state of things." From the recent Phillipines' devastation to myriad disasters of the past year, we feel what Berry call's the "punch in the gut." Those hard hits remind us of what matters the most:

  • Loved ones
  • Baby pics
  • Beloved pets

She asks a powerful question: "What's left when nothing's left?" And as dark as that may sound, the light dawns right as we turn to the things that matter.

Family, love-flow, momentos heralding the wonder of human being. Remember, we're always able to shine a light of Thanksgiving, no matter the time of year.

Thankful Much?

Thankful Much? | Unplug | Scoop.it
Suddenly everywhere we look we are reminded to be grateful, but how exactly can we express our gratitude?
J Ruth Kelly's insight:

We can make a study and ritual of gratitude, if we so desire. And, for me, that's the point, the only point. I've not found choosing happiness works to make me happy and neither have I found thankfulness to make me happy. Did the chicken come first? Or the egg?

I've found happiness comes and goes and sometimes gratitude comes from happiness, sometimes vice versa. Sometimes happiness just is and it's the same way with thankfulness. The point here? There's value in the art of cultivating a mindset as long as you've decided why it matters to you and what you want to create for yourself. While this article doesn't go into that fact, it does pack up quite a feast of gratitude opportunities. You'll be glad, grateful, thankful for the ideas and the thoughts on Thankfulness especially this time of year.

Counting Your Blessings Enhances Wellbeing

Counting Your Blessings Enhances Wellbeing | Unplug | Scoop.it
Now that it’s November, most minds in the United States are turning to Thanksgiving, even if malls across America are trying to skip it straight for Christmas.
Susan Taylor's insight:

Christmas is coming!  I walked into a store on September 30 and was reminded of that all too early.

Dan Callanan shares with us a research study that suggests this:  Simply counting your blessings each and every day can "be an effective intervention for well-being enhancement."  He links this to the importance of what educators can do with their students to teach them about expressing gratitude.

Good advice for everyone -- and not just during the holidays.

What Could Be; What Might Be; If Only...

What Could Be; What Might Be; If Only... | Unplug | Scoop.it
Imagine, what a relief! Finally, we can live without expectation, prejudice or longing, or the desire for things to be different than they are.
Susan Taylor's insight:

What could be; what might be; if only...We tend to spend our time living in "these worlds."  Slippery, elusive distractions from being in the present moment.

Yet the truth of the matter is the past is gone and we never really know what the future will bring.  No matter how much "we plan, plot and arrange..we still never know what will happen in the next moment".

Contrary to what you might think, living in the here and now can be incredibly liberating.  "Being present invites a deep sense of completion that there really is nowhere else we need to be or go".

So take a deep mindful breath and imagine a life without attachment, judgment or yearning.  Just be who you are where you are in this moment whatever it is...as it is.

"BE" Home for the Holidays

"BE" Home for the Holidays | Unplug | Scoop.it
It's the most wonderful—and stressful—time of the year. Read on to learn how mindfulness can help over the holidays.
Susan Taylor's insight:

There's no place like home for the holidays.  And if you truly want to "be" home for the holidays, instead of feeling overwhelmed -- try a new approach -- one that involves less "doing" and more "being".

Mindfulness can help!

  • Place your attention on gratitude instead of instant gratification.
  • Deal with gift giving and consumption in a more mindful way.
  • Take advantage of less sunlight, contemplating what can only be seen in the dark.
  • Instead of going on autopilot, use the "season for connecting" to do just that -- without technology.
  • Slow down; focus on what is important to you; and spend time sharing with others

Gratitude = Complacency (& Other Myths to Bust)

Gratitude = Complacency (& Other Myths to Bust) | Unplug | Scoop.it
Does gratitude make us lazy? Naive? Robert Emmons, the world’s leading scientific expert on gratitude, debunks some common myths and misperceptions.
J Ruth Kelly's insight:

One would think simple thankfulness is exactly that: simple, free of misperceptions and distortions. But it isn't. As it turns out, mythbusting includes the wrong thinking concerning the power of gratitude

3 Misconceptions to Blast Out of the Stratosphere:

1. Being thankful makes you complacent.

2. Gratitude is just warm fuzzy denial.

3. Thankfulness is only for the religious.

Robert Emmons, long-time researcher of all things gratitude, slices through the myths and reminds you why the power of gratitude works. Got gratitude?

Grey Hairs and Gratitude

Grey Hairs and Gratitude | Unplug | Scoop.it
I recently started this crazy ass kicking workout called P90x. It’s intense and I love it. In fact, the other day after my shower, I was admiring the positive changes of my body. A little tighter here, a little lift there.
Susan Taylor's insight:

Pleased with her appearance after some weeks with P90x, Nicky Roberts recently looked into the mirror, spotting two gray hairs.  Feeling a bit unhappy at the sight, she used this as an opportunity to inquire within and received a surprising answer.  Embrace them with gratitude

Gratitude towards aging?  This raised curiousity for Nicky about whether she could have appreciation about the fact that she is getting older.

Putting aside fears about being unattractive, sagging body parts and being judged by other women, Ms. Roberts has come to realize that she has always admired the inner beauty of older women who seem to be completely comfortable with their aging process.

Gray hairs plucked and faced with some uncertainty, Nicky admits that there are still moments of fear.  Yet she has also become mindful that there is a benefit to aging and in feeling more peaceful about it, aging comes more gracefully.

Spirituality - In & Out of Hell (It's not just for suckers!) | Unplug | Scoop.it
“The spiritual path is a consolation prize for people whose lives have gone to hell.
J Ruth Kelly's insight:

You can embrace a spiritual path (or what some might simply refer to as personal growth) when everything's gone to hell and tell yourself it's chosen out of desperation. Or. You can recognize the value in a process of growth and development, value that creates more value and makes for a more balanced life in the long run. (I personally like the "sound" of a 10-day silent meditation retreats!) Whatever your inclination, this article reminds you what's to love about spirituality.
