This Painting Has A Brilliant Message. An Unfortunate Reality. | Unplug | Scoop.it

"Viral Nova | This series of paintings by Poland based artist Pawel Kuczynski helps to remind us that there is more than one way to view the world. Working since 2004 to show us the world behind the world, his ideas make us reconsider what we take for granted."

craig daniels's insight:

I fell in love with this painting on many levels and thought those of you who check out Unplug would be interested in seeing it.

Unplug before it's too late: Here are the 20 Signs You're On The Internet Too Much.
craig daniels's insight:

It's the question of the day with lots of hair pulling and hand wringing, and most of us want to ignore it all together.

Check out the slide show and bring your sense of humor with you. Here a couple of examples of our spending too much time on the web.

  • You're incapable of writing anything longer than 140 characters.
  • The last time you saw a sunset was on instagram.
  • You've developed excessive FOMO (fear of missing out)

7 Reasons I Dumped Facebook

7 Reasons I Dumped Facebook | Unplug | Scoop.it
It’s official.  I’m off the Facebook grid.  Nobody offended me.  I didn’t have a bad experience.  While I’m not thrilled about the idea of Big Brother watching my every move, I’m not particularly paranoid about social media sharing.   Therefore, I’m...

Facebook: Waste of Time? | Social Media Today

Facebook: Waste of Time? | Social Media Today | Unplug | Scoop.it
One thing has become painfully clear: Facebook is not worth the time and effort.

"Facebook has designed a system in which the best way to “win” is to appeal to the Edgerank lowest common denominator.  Unlike other networks where you can do whatever you like and succeed based on your brand, the merit of your content, or your storytelling, Facebook has built a system in which the only way to get visibility is to acquire the social signals they deem important, or pay for it."

Facebook Users Are Playing Games

Facebook Users Are Playing Games | Unplug | Scoop.it
If it seems like you just can't stop playing 'Candy Crush Saga' or any other Facebook games, don't worry, you're in good company -- a lot of good company.
Susan Taylor's insight:

Facebook revealed on Wednesday that "of all its active users - 375 million people - play at least one Facebook-connected game in an average month".

Users who play on 2 or more platforms are more likely to click on ads and spend 3.3 times more money on in-game purchases.

And that's no game!

Remain on Facebook When You Die

Remain on Facebook When You Die | Unplug | Scoop.it
Facebook will no longer limit who can view the accounts of its deceased members. Until now, Facebook would change the privacy settings on a deceased person's account — known as a "memorial...
Susan Taylor's insight:

No longer will Facebook limit who can view accounts of its deceased members.

It's called a "memorial account".  And it's intended to "respect the choices a person made in life" by leaving the privacy settings set as the account owner originally set them.

Ditch the Facebook and Go To Nepal

Ditch the Facebook and Go To Nepal | Unplug | Scoop.it
"I’m done with daily hustle, I’m tired of social media", this is something many of us feel. Those who were born before or 90’s know the best of life, not having these nicer means. Phone calls by...
Susan Taylor's insight:

Are you fed up with the daily hustle?  Are you tired of social media?  If you've forgotten -- or never experienced -- life without smartphones and Facebook, then ditch the Facebook and go to Nepal.

Have luxurious candle light dinners -- every night!  Enjoy long chats with your family; play with your kids; get to know yourself.  Meditate.  Breathe.  Bask in the fresh mountain air.  Experience life without electricity.  Take all the time you need -- to just "be".

If you're constantly opening apps or "you go to your browser for other reasons and type in the Facebook or Twitter URL; then it is definitely time for you to come to Nepal."

A Digital Day with No Dialogue

A Digital Day with No Dialogue | Unplug | Scoop.it
Modern Zamanlar (Modern Times) captures A Day In Our Life… 8:00 minutes without dialogue, yet it shoots by in a flash.
Susan Taylor's insight:

"The tragedy of modern man is not that he knows less and less about the meaning of his own life, but that it bothers him less and less". -- Vaclav Havel

We all live in the 21st Century -- the Ditigal Age.  It is for that very reason alone you should watch this short film.

This 8-minute film portrays "A Day in Our Life" and does so without any dialogue.  "Peppered with humor and layered with desperation", it draws us into "those intimate moments of our own lives that we know too well".

Why I Spent So Much Time on Facebook

"Facebook, social media, Twitter, Instagram – it is all an effort to share our stories, to connect with other people, to know we are not alone in this crazy plight of trying to find what makes us tick and then to make a life doing it."

craig daniels's insight:

As the author "Cat" so nicely says as she prepares to leave Facebook, "it's all an effort to share our stories, to connect with other people."

After all the hand-wringing and distractions it really does come down to wanting to share our stories with people who will appreciate what we have to say. We put our struggles and triumphs out into the open forum and hope we won't be crushed by the trolls who lurk under the bridge to do just that.

But people forget that there is more than Facebook and Twitter, more than social media and the glowing screen deep into the night. People forget for so many reasons that unplugging is not withdrawal from but embracing of.

Cat's post is about loving social media and of loving the tangible feelings and palpitations that are life outside of it.

"Consider this: Less than a decade ago, there was no Facebook. Twitter hadn’t yet been conceived. Researchers and psychologists were still learning that the Internet—and more so, computer games—could indeed be addictive."
