If you’re getting ready to go on vacation for the holidays, are you planning to truly disconnect from work or do you expect to get roped into work calls and emails while you’re away?

Getting ready for that holiday vacation?  How will you spend it?  Disconnected from work or roped into calls and emails?  Alison Green shares with us some great tips on how to truly unplug and leave your work behind.

 

  1. Plan your vacation well in advance, completing as much as possible beforehand to help avoid any stress over work "pile-up".
  2. Give people plenty of notice before you leave.
  3. Give your contact information to one person who will act as your gatekeeper.
  4. Set up an informative out-of-office message to inform people you are on vacation.
  5. Take your email off your phone.
  6. Resist the temptation to check-in with the office.
  7. If you really can't unplug completely, set boundaries with your office.

Like anything worth having in life, balance requires work.  It's also going to require courage, conscious intent and sacrifice.

 

"At some point, if we really want balance, we need to be willing to set boundaries and stick to them."  We also need to stop pointing a finger. Your imbalance is not someone else's fault.

 

Francine Ward, attorney and author of this blog, understands that she cannot have it all and is grateful for it.  You're going to end of sacrificing something, so believing in the idea that you can have everything is nothing more than a set up for disappointment.

 

If you truly want balance in your life, you need to make some tough choices.  Stop doing certain things; stop allowing others to create urgencies in your life and learn the power of the word "NO".
