I have breakfast at a small bagel shop in Spokane. They posted a sign that basically says: Our parents taught us it was rude to interrupt others. We do not want to interrupt while you are on the phone, so take a moment, finish your call, and we will serve the next person in the line. When you are ready, we will serve you. Thank you."

Some research suggests using cell phones in classrooms should not be prohibited, but every 20-30 minutes students be given a 2-3 minute tech break to help them self-regulate their use of phones. A strict prohibition does not stop them from thinking and engaging with their phones.

Never Unplug? That Can’t Be Healthy

Never Unplug? That Can’t Be Healthy | Unplug | Scoop.it

A new demographic of Americans is beginning to emerge: people who are “almost constantly” connected to the Internet. While 73 percent of Americans go online on a daily basis, Pew Research Center recently found that 21 percent of those surveyed are on constantly, on smartphones and laptops and tablets. It’s even higher for people ages 18 to 29: Of that group, 36 percent are always online.

Marisol Espinoza's curator insight, February 21, 11:15 PM

I realized after reading this article that I need to truly unplug from my phone and "the world" for a while and try living without all that. It's crazy to think I always have my phone on me and I'm texting or on Twitter or any other social media I have and it isn't helping me with any, but actually making my social skills go down. I'm noticing I'm not being as talkative to others face to face, but I love to talk on the phone or over text, which that's not healthy at all. I need to learn how to be without social media and my phone. I need to start connecting with more people face to face because relationships behind a screen is worthless and it doesn't help my personal skills nor my social skills. Or even get rid of my social media and even go away from my home and leave my phone behind and try and see things through my own eyes and not through a screen.
