Water contamination news: USA Fracking- Investigation reveals fracking fluids were illegally dumped Why dumping chemicals and waste endangers our water supply
Why dumping chemicals and waste endangers our water supply
Groundwater can become contaminated in many ways. If rain water or surface water comes into contact with contaminated soil while seeping into the ground, it can become polluted and can carry the pollution from the soil to the groundwater.
Groundwater can also become contaminated when liquid hazardous substances themselves soak down through the soil or rock into the groundwater. Some liquid hazardous substances do not mix with the groundwater but remain pooled within the soil or bedrock. These pooled substances can act as long-term sources of groundwater contamination as the groundwater flows through the soil or rock and comes into contact with them.
Texas has more than 8,000 active disposal wells, about 850 of which are large commercial operations, according to the Railroad Commission.
Wastewater disposal wells like this one are becoming a common landmark in the drilling regions of Texas as the water-intensive practice of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, continues to spread. In the fracking process, several million gallons of water, combined with sand and chemicals, are sent down a well to break up rock and retrieve oil and gas. Some of the fluid comes back up, along with additional underground water.
Most of this wastewater is trucked to disposal wells and injected thousands of feet underground for permanent storage. But those wells have caused concern about truck traffic, accidents and the possibility for spills and groundwater contamination.

In 1794 Thomas Paine released “The Age of Reason“, a call to abandon blind loyalty to institutionalized religion. The title of Paine’s work can also be applied to today’s fracking industry — in the age of cancer.
In 2012 alone there were 1,600,000 newly diagnosed cancer discoveries in the United States. Some 1,500 people die of cancer every day, according to the American Cancer Society. It is the second leading cause of death in the United States — accounting for one of every four deaths.
Is this the time to proceed with the massive introduction of fracking into our society?
16 wells already in City of Boulder many next to residences. Existing wells candidates for fracking hydro-carbons 1,000 ft under homes, schools and offices

Colorado residents are taking a stand. Citizens in Longmont voted overwhelmingly to ban fracking last November in a historic, citizen-driven effort. Fort Collins passed a moratorium on fracking with a unanimous city council vote in December. El Paso County passed a moratorium at the end of 2011. Colorado Springs passed a moratorium in 2012. Erie and Boulder County passed a moratorium in 2012. (On Thursday, Jan. 24, at 4 p.m., Boulder County Commissioners are holding a public meeting with time for citizen comments to decide whether to extend the moratorium on fracking in Boulder County.)
Controversial hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, that is behind country’s natural gas boom has come under scrutiny in new Hollywood drama Promised Land,
Amy Goodman: articled in Nation of Change on Sunday discussed and provided an infomative video on whether or not fracking is truly safe. Debate on controversial natural gas drilling technique as NY moratorium may expire.
I always enjoy just watching a video.

Commission to consider disclosure of fracking chemicals The Independent Weekly At least 60 chemicals can be used in fracking operations, according to FracFocus, which is managed by two multistate government agencies.
And certain people state that the entire process is safe? If you research some of the chemicals utilized I think you will tend to disagree..Fracking must be researched further and we MUST find a way to make it safe, before it is too late and there is too much damage done to our water.

OPPOSITION to fracking has been considerable, if not unanimous, in the global green community, and in Europe in particular. France and Bulgaria, countries with the largest shale-gas reserves in Europe, have already banned fracking. Protesters are blocking potential drilling sites in Poland and England. Opposition to fracking has entered popular culture with the release of “The Promised Land,” starring Matt Damon. Even the Rolling Stones have weighed in with a reference to fracking in their new single, “Doom and Gloom.”

Hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, is the process of injecting water and chemicals into the ground to break up shale to release natural gas deposits.
“There have been two movies on the topic of fracking, and a national and statewide debate is going on now,” Breitinger said. “As an environmentalist, I’m concerned about it, and the purpose of the debate is to enlighten people on the details of fracking and on how to debate environmental topics.”

84,000 gal of water contaminated with oil and chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing spilled from broken well-head in field about 4 miles north of Windsor.
A mechanical failure at about 9:30 a.m. Monday sent a smelly stream of steaming, greenish fluid onto soil and required fire trucks testing air every 30 minutes to ensure leaking natural gas was not about to explode and the use of a vacuum truck to try to suck up the liquid, state natural resources spokesman Todd Hartman said.

Policy-makers have traditionally depended on university research to make tough decisions. But in the last two decades, we’ve seen an increasing advocacy role for corporations that try to sway regulators and public opinion with research of their own design.
Even as water grows more precious, the Environmental Protection Agency has permitted oil and gas, mining and other industries to contaminate aquifers in more than 1,500 places, many of them in Western states stricken by drought.

My name is Stephen Cleghorn. I am an organic farmer operating a 50-acre certified organic farm in Jefferson County, PA. If you’d like to know more about me, visit the farm’s website at www.paradisegardensandfarm.com and you can learn more about this farm and about me. You can also link to a PowerPoint I have done on the need for a moratorium on unconventional drilling for natural gas in the Marcellus Shale by a means commonly known as “fracking” – which refers to the whole process known as “high volume slickwater fracking of long laterals” to release gas from tight shale formation such as the Marcellus. This blog will be occasional posts about the “fracking” and those who would transform one-half the land mass of Pennsylvania into an industrialized zone to get at the shale gas and realize millions in profits for themselves. The blog’s name is taken from the writings of Saint Augustine who believed “Hope” to be the greatest of spiritual gifts. And, says Augustine, Hope has two lovely daughters: anger and courage. Anger so that what must not be may not be; courage so that what should be can be. Anger and Courage. We will need both in this struggle to defeat the fracking that could lay waste to one-half of Pennsylvania and threaten the water supplies of millions of people. This blog will be about having the courage to stand up to the massive global corporations that would ruin our state, take their profits, and leave the mess to future generations of Pennsylvanians to clean up. We need to rise up, my friends and be not afraid.
