Online education is not new. The University of Phoenix started its online degree program in 1989. Four million college students took at least one online class during the fall of 2007. But, over the past few months, something has changed. The elite, pace-setting universities have embraced the Internet. Not long ago, online courses were interesting experiments. Now online activity is at the core of how these schools envision their futures.

The Politecnico di Milano, one of Italy’s leading technical universities, has announced that from the beginning of the 2014 academic year, all MSc and PhD courses will be taught exclusively in English. But some of the institution’s professors oppose the switch to English from Italian, and 285 have signed a petition to the rector.

While much about being a university professor has remained unchanged for centuries, the way today’s academics research, teach and fulfil administrative duties has changed dramatically, as a result of technological change and a cultural shift in what the public expects of academia.

For this post, we have elaborated rankings of universities based on the output they have in each of the major scientific fields. Then we took the Top 100 in each field and saw them by countries. The result is the following table where each row represents a country and each cell shows how many institutions that country has within the Top 100 in the corresponding field. The rank is ordered by the average of institutions that countries have in Top 100. We have used Scopus as the data source, after a disambiguation process of institution names.

The US Court of Appeals, 1st Circuit overturned a summary judgement by a lower court ordering a whistleblower lawsuit filed by Dr. Kenneth Jones against Harvard Medical School, its teaching hospitals, Brigham and Women's and Massachusetts General Hospital, and Dr. Marilyn Albert (Principal Investigator) and Dr. Ronald Killiany to proceed to trial. The case involves the largest Alzheimer's disease [AD] research grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health (from 1980 through 2007) for a large project aimed at identifying early physical signs of Alzheimer's by scanning certain regions of the brain with MRIs.
