"As the CCSS has been crafted with principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to support inclusive access for all students with identified learning needs and/or disabilities, English Learners, linguistic minority students, as well as students from fragile families, many educators respond with concern that without technological resources, they feel challenged to design instruction to meet the diverse needs of their students. While technology can provide expanded access, there are many “no-tech and low-tech” options that many teachers utilize that are also UDL-considerate." - Jennifer Finney-Ellison

Baltimore County Public Schools in Maryland, Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation in Indiana, Cecil County Public Schools in Maryland and Chelmsford Public Schools in Massachusetts participated in the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation funded project to explore and pilot processes and tools developed to support UDL Implementation within their own unique districts. The story is told primarily through the voices of the dedicated educator leaders from these districts and the UDL facilitators who supported them. During the one-year grant, the districts worked with CAST, Inc. to develop and implement an effective and sustainable district plan to support the integration of Universal Design for Learning.

More Tips on Infusing UDL into Your Teaching - Multimedia

More Tips on Infusing UDL into Your Teaching - Multimedia | Universal Design for Learning and Curriculum | Scoop.it

A UVM blog from the Center of Teaching and Learning.

"This post focuses on one of the three core principles in UDL: multiple means of representation.

This means moving beyond textual representation by presenting information and conceptual knowledge to students in a variety of formats, e.g., images, video, and audio. Not only does research indicate that this practice can enhance student understanding and retention of course content, it can also be used to engage students and prime discussion. Students responding to an image, song or movie clip can spark reflection and debate."

Supporting the Classroom with Materials for Instruction

Supporting the Classroom with Materials for Instruction | Universal Design for Learning and Curriculum | Scoop.it

"Materials in a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) classroom are different. These materials will be used to give students multiple means of representation of concepts, multiple means of engaging in learning the concepts, and multiple means of expression for students to demonstrate what they have learned. In a UDL classroom, instruction is more flexible and provides accessibility for all students. Teachers who use the principles of UDL in their classroom recognize that instruction does not come as a one-size-fits-all design."
