The Chronicle of Evidence-Based Mentoring

The Chronicle of Evidence-Based Mentoring | United Way | Scoop.it

Note from the Editor of the Chronicle of Evidence-Based Mentoring:

The Chronicle of Evidence-Based Mentoring, a new online newsletter for sharing new findings and ideas about youth mentoring.  This new channel represents a continuation of MENTOR’s Research Corner, with the goal of encouraging active dialogue around evidence-based practice in youth mentoring. With the Chronicle, I hope that we can create an open dialogue around new findings and, in doing so, improve the practice of youth mentoring.

As you can see, the Chronicle contains several features.

- The Research Corner—a blog, which will synthesize findings as they pertain to a single topic.

- Forum—a running commentary on mentoring research, policy, and practice, featuring the responses of guests with different views on the topic a question or topic.

- New Mentoring Research—summaries and implications of new youth mentoring findings.

- Research from Related Fields—summaries and implications of new findings from other fields (e.g., developmental psychology, public health, philosophy).

- Profiles in Mentoring—Q & A’s with the researchers whose work is featured. Readers will be introduced to a wide range of upcoming as well as more established researchers and practitioners.

- Practice Corner—featuring new practices, innovative programs, and mentoring providers’ views and activities.

Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring, 3rd Edition

MENTOR is an organization that promotes, advocates and is a resource for mentors and mentoring initiatives worldwide.

Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring™, Third Edition

MENTOR’s keystone publication on mentoring standards has been recently updated and released to include the latest research and practice wisdom available to help mentoring relationships thrive and endure.

The Elements of Effective Practice for Mentoring™, Third Edition, was sponsored through a generous grant from The MetLife Foundation and, as in past editions, brought together the nation’s foremost authorities on mentoring under the leadership of Dr. Jean Rhodes of the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and Dr. Janis Kupersmidt of innovation Research & Training.

This new publication includes six evidence-based standards addressing mentor and mentee recruitment; screening; training; matching; monitoring and support; and closure. Each standard offers benchmarks for day-to-day operations, and they are applicable in stand-alone mentoring programs, as well as programs where mentoring is one element. Each standard also offers enhancements that program staff can incorporate, based on the experience of outstanding mentoring practitioners.  Further, this resource includes a section on practical advice in building a new mentoring program or strengthening an existing one. It focuses on program design and planning; program management; and program evaluation.

About 64 percent of the nearly 1,200 participants finish the 15-week Getting Ahead class, and their income increased an average of 28 percent during that time. The longer they stay in the group, the more their income rises.
