AT THE TABLE: IDEAS AND INSIGHTS FROM LIVING CITIES’ INTEGRATION INITIATIVE : Volume 3

AT THE TABLE: IDEAS AND INSIGHTS FROM LIVING CITIES’ INTEGRATION INITIATIVE : Volume 3 | United Way | Scoop.it
Summary

Welcome to the third issue of At the Table: Ideas and Insights from The Integration Initiative! Through At the Table, we aim to share our latest learning on how to make cities places of economic opportunity for all residents.  Through TII, cross-sector teams of decision-makers in Baltimore, Cleveland, Detroit, Newark, and the Twin Cities are working to transform key systems in order to produce better outcomes for low-income people.  While the systems vary—from mobility to health to economic development to workforce—we continue to learn a lot from each site about  the leadership infrastructure (what Living Cities calls the One Table approach), and innovative strategies to deploy capital necessary to make transformational change. Now we’re halfway through the first phase of The Integration Initiative.

In this issue of At the Table, we explore how learning is the key measure of progress towards systems change, and how programs serve as a mechanism to learn about a system. We discuss how data is a key factor in this learning, but that there are many challenges to initiatives collecting and using data in strategic ways. We also sat down with Jonathan Sage-Martinson, Director of the Central Corridor Funders Collaborative, to discuss efforts in the Twin Cities to align the workforce and economic development systems.

These pieces reflect thinking during specific points in time in the midst of complex multi-year work.

Personal Attention Reduces Poverty (SSIR)

Personal Attention Reduces Poverty (SSIR) | United Way | Scoop.it

Circles, a national program for helping families get out of poverty, taps an underused resource: middle-class support groups...Gains made by families are laudable, given that most people have been stuck in poverty through two or three generations. About 64 percent of the nearly 1,200 participants finish the 15-week Getting Ahead class, and their income increased an average of 28 percent during that time. The longer they stay in the group, the more their income rises.

The Social Innovation Fund Announces Four New 2012 Grantees

The SIF announced the selection of four outstanding new grantees on July 31, 2012. The new grantees will each receive awards of $2 million over two years, and are eligible for continued funding for a total of up to five years. These four grantees, like the 16 organizations selected in previous competitions, are experienced grantmakers with strong track records of success who have proposed compelling, innovative programs to tackle some of our country's biggest challenges in areas of high need.

They are:

- GreenLight Fund, which will work to close the achievement and opportunity gap for youth in Boston, Philadelphia, and the San Francisco Bay area.

- Twin Cities Strive in partnership with Greater Twin Cities United Way, which will focus on youth development for children in kindergarten through college in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.

- John A. Hartford Foundation, which will expand an evidence-based depression treatment program into rural communities in Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho.

- Capital Area United Way, which will address early childhood development in the Greater Baton Rouge area.

The Social Innovation Fund, an initiative enacted under the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, is a new way of doing business for the federal government that stands to yield greater impact on urgent national challenges.

Understanding the Value of Backbone Organizations in Collective Impact: Part 4 (SSIR)

Understanding the Value of Backbone Organizations in Collective Impact: Part 4 (SSIR) | United Way | Scoop.it

How and to what extent are backbone organizations effective catalysts for achieving community-level progress? In FSG's previous work on collective impact, reported in "Channeling Change,"  the “intangibles” of the work—a key one is leadership identification and development—can be incredibly important in driving the progress of an initiative. In our baseline data collection, stakeholders shared with FSG their deep convictions and heartfelt sentiments about the backbone leaders they know best. In aggregate, the synthesized feedback confirmed a compelling picture of the importance of effective leadership among backbone organizations and the potential of collective impact overall.
