Coffee & Empathy: Why data without a soul is meaningless

Coffee & Empathy: Why data without a soul is meaningless | Unified Inbox | Scoop.it
As we move towards a quantified society, one shaped by data, we start to dismiss things that are unquantified. Empathy, emotion and storytelling — these are as much a part of business as they are of life.

Is Banning Telecommuting the Death Knell? | Collaborative Strategies

Here is a discussion from a LinkedIn group I am in called AWE (Alternative Work Environments). I think this discussion covers the topic pretty well. There was an interesting article the other day on ReadWrite by Fredric Paul called "Why Banning Telecommuters is a sign your company is already screwed."http://readwrite.com/2013/03/06/why-banning-telecommuters-is-a-sign-your-company-is-screwed utm_source=ReadWrite+Newsletters&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=574eb5009b-RWWDailyNewsletter . This article makes the case that only losers don't support telecommuting, and that the ban on telecommuting is a last ditch effort at control of a population that is not or has not been controlled.  Ms. Mayer's own study showed that some people at Yahoo! were clocking in hours but not working.

Unified Inbox's insight:

We feel that the importance of strong colloborative based tools is crucial in ensuring a strong remote working culture.

The Power of Un-Location

The Power of Un-Location | Unified Inbox | Scoop.it

The past few days were filled with traveling from New Zealand to Hong Kong for a couple of conferences, then flying late into Shanghai before visiting one of our business partners in Hangzhou next day early morning and going back to Shanghai the same day where I now am for further business meetings.

Travel is glamorous. For those who don’t do it.

What Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer May Be Missing About Telecommuting - nathanzeldes.com

What Yahoo’s Marissa Mayer May Be Missing About Telecommuting - nathanzeldes.com | Unified Inbox | Scoop.it

Last month there was a big hoopla  when Yahoo’s CEO, Marissa Mayer, issued a ban on Work from Home by the company’s employees. Like troops retreating into the castle, Yahoos have been recalled to the office. All over the planet the media and blogosphere are abuzz with criticism and counter-criticism about what was seen as a regression from the reigning paradigm of workplace flexibility and Work/Life balance. Even the irrelevant fact that Mayer is a woman and a mother was used by some who painted her as a traitor to her gender.

Unified Inbox's insight:

The Yahoo announcement really set the web on fire, and Nathan Zeldes is just one of our advisors who wrote about the implications.

Forget Virality, Selling Enterprise Software Is Still Old School | TechCrunch

Forget Virality, Selling Enterprise Software Is Still Old School | TechCrunch | Unified Inbox | Scoop.it

Lately, in Silicon Valley and its counterparts around the world, disappointment has ruled the halls of companies that had a huge impact with consumers, but then fizzled as investments when they went public. Facebook’s and Zynga’s IPOs are the most notorious examples. Attention quickly moved from the consumer to the enterprise market, where Splunk, Palo Alto Networks, Workday, and LinkedIn are all humming along just fine. Entrepreneurs seeking to sell to enterprise customers should recognize that the business-to-business (B2B) market, especially with respect to IT, plays by a different set of rules than the business-to-consumer (B2C) space.

Unified Inbox's insight:

Some insights into why Unified Inbox made the shift in focus away from B2C markets.
