It draws upon an article entitled "Competitive Food Sales in Schools and Childhood Obesity: A Longitudinal Study," by Jennifer Van Hook and Claire E. Altman in the January 2012 edition of the journal "Sociology in Education." The article states that Van Hook and Altman conducted a study that revealed that as U.S. students progressed from the fifth to eighth grades, more vending machines and snack bars were available in schools.
