Hilton Worldwide to Ban Shark Fin in all Owned and Managed Properties across Asia Pacific by April 1, 2014 | Hilton Worldwide Global Media Center

Hilton Worldwide to Ban Shark Fin in all Owned and Managed Properties across Asia Pacific by April 1, 2014 | Hilton Worldwide Global Media Center | All about water, the oceans, environmental issues | Scoop.it

Hilton Worldwide today announced that it will cease serving shark fin and stop accepting new orders for shark fin dishes by April 1, 2014. The ban covers all restaurants and F&B facilities operated by its 96 owned and managed properties across Asia Pacific.

In December 2012, the company first removed shark fin from menus across all restaurants and food and beverage (F&B) facilities operated by its managed properties in China and Southeast Asia, and only serving it on request. This action helped pave the way for a ban, which first took effect in Southeast Asia on September 1, 2013 and then in Greater China on February 1, 2014. Banquet bookings made in each region prior to the respective ban dates will be honored accordingly.

Seldom observed, the frilled shark may capture prey by bending its body and lunging forward like a snake. The long, extremely flexible jaws enable it to swallow prey whole, while its many rows of small, needle-like teeth make it difficult for the prey to escape.

Title: Thousands of puffins wiped out in storms

Author: Daily Mail Reporter

Date: February 19, 2014

Main Idea: Many puffins may have been killed in the storms in the UK.

Summary:

1. More than 35 puffins have been reported to have washed up on the bays of Spain and France.

2. The original record was 17 back in 1979.

3. Drowning is a common cause of death for puffins.

Opinion/POV: No.

Question: How far do puffins usually travel before returning back to their shelter?

Is this article important to science?

I believe that this article is important to science because the number of puffins could have dropped a lot due to the heavy storms in the UK.

Article: Thousands of Puffins Wiped Out in Storms

Author: Daily Mail Reporter

Main Idea: Many puffins from the UK are being found dead and washed up on the shores of Spain and France

Summary:

1) Puffins are fighting for survival due to storms in the bay of Biscay

2) The original amount of deaths recorded was only 17 back in 1979

3) The rapid increase of the puffins death has significantly began to affect other animal populations

Opinion: No, it was based purely off of facts

Question: Why is drowning a major cause of death for puffins? How will this affect the UK and other countries?

Is this article important to science?: Yes, because this tells us how much the world is changing and evolving since so many animals, like puffins, are beginning to go extinct or are now few in numbers due to the increase of their deaths.

Types of Dolphins You Didn’t Even Know Existed

Types of Dolphins You Didn’t Even Know Existed | All about water, the oceans, environmental issues | Scoop.it
You might not know this, but there are 37 species of dolphins swimming around oceans and rivers, riding alongside boats, and jumping up doing flips.
You’re probably used to seeing the bottlenose dolphin because it’s the most well-known and well-populated species, and it can be found all over the world. Flipper is a bottlenose, and so are all those dolphins in The Cove, the ones being slaughtered in Taiji.
What’s more is that some of them look completely different—such as the hourglass dolphin, which is black and white and looks like a killer whale, or the Amazon river dolphin, which is pink. Plus, there are all kinds of amazing facts to learn about them. Click through the gallery to find out more.

The Highs and Lows of Learning to Dive

The Highs and Lows of Learning to Dive | All about water, the oceans, environmental issues | Scoop.it

Originally from England, I first learned to dive so that I could go cage diving with great whites off Guadalupe Island, Mexico, in 2008. From that first shark encounter onwards, I have been utterly hooked on the underwater world, and particularly on the issue of shark conservation. Whilst studying for my degree in London, I worked at London Aquarium, before going to Mozambique to research whale sharks off Tofo. I completed my PADI Instructor’s course while living in South Africa, and spent nine months teaching and guiding on Aliwal Shoal, where I set up a tiger shark ID project and began writing for the conservation organisation Shark Angels. In September last year, I set off on a thirteen month journey around South East Asia, Fiji and New Zealand, and am currently instructing in Kota Kinabalu, Borneo.
