For environmentalists like Stanley Shea of French-founded Bloom Association, that must change. He is fighting against finning by raising awareness in Hong Kong.

“We try to understand when we eat the fins and when is the biggest occasions," he said. "Then when we are understanding the theme, then we can start moving on developing a strategy to reduce the demand of shark fins.”

Shea and fellow activists have been quite effective. Over the last two years governments in Hong Kong and mainland China, as well as big corporations and hotel chains, have announced they will take shark fin soup off their menus and banquets.

The release comes in conjunction with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) adopting changes that will waive the recreational license requirement for divers harvesting Lionfish using certain gear. The FWC has also excluded Lionfish from the commercial and recreational bag limits, allowing people to take as many invasive fish as they can.

Lionfish are considered the super villains of the reef because of their voracious appetites and because they have no known predators.

"Right now it's still illegal to spearfish within 100 yards of shoreline, and there are a lot of lionfish hanging out under bridges in that zone," he said.

Scientists have taken over 20000 pictures of the dorsal fins of great white sharks at Gansbaai but have identified only 532 individual sharks over a five-year period

The study by marine biologists from the Dyer Island Conservation Trust at Gansbaai in the southern Capefound that the total number of great white sharks might be as much as 50% lower than the previously estimated 3000-5000.

By taking more than 20000 photographs of sharks' dorsal fins over five years in Gansbaai - where the world's densest population of the species is located - scientists were able to identify only 532 sharks in the area.

"Marine biologists used open population statistics to extrapolate their findings [and estimated] the number of great white sharks in this densely populated area is most likely less than 1000," said the trust.

Marine biologist Michelle Wcisel, who works for the trust, said it was possible that the great white could be one of the most endangered species in the world.

But rather than be left to fend for itself or die, the whale appears to be cared for by members of its pod, which share their food with the youngster.

Explore the Grecian Wreck in Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary

In June 1906, the Great Lakes freighter Grecian struck a reef in northern Lake Huron, tearing a hole in the bottom. While being towed to Detroit for repair, the damaged vessel flooded and sank near Thunder Bay. Today, as one of the most popular recreational dive sites in the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary, the Grecian rests on an even keel at 100 feet below the treacherous waves that betrayed it over one hundred years ago.
