One of the main concerns with climate change is that it’s causing the oceans to advance. Global sea levels have risen about seven inches over the past century and that pace is accelerating. Not only does this threaten coastal regions, but it also makes storm surges much worse — both for huge hurricanes like Sandy and for smaller storms too.

Pacific stocks of the oceanic whitetip shark, a favourite of fin soup enthusiasts, sank by as much as 17 percent a year between 1995 and 2010 despite catch and finning limits, a study said Wednesday.

And the north Pacific blue shark, also sought after by Asian chefs, showed a worrying population decline of about five percent per year, according to the research published in the journal Conservation Biology.

BEHAVIOUR of great white sharks when a shark cage dive operator is present at Neptune Islands changes dramatically during daylight and causes the sharks to swim closer to the surface, according to researcher Dr Charlie Huveneers.

Dr Huveneers presented his findings at the Marine Innovations Southern Australia (MISA) Symposium in Port Lincoln on Tuesday.
