Plastic pollutants circulate in pockets of the Great Lakes at concentrations higher than any other body of water on Earth, according to a State University of New York researcher.

In July, Sherri "Sam" Mason, a professor at SUNY Fredonia and coordinator of the school's Environmental Sciences program, led a survey of plastic pollution in the Great Lakes that was done in collaboration with the 5 Gyres Institute.

A GREAT white shark could be in Lake Macquarie, according to five shark experts who looked at pictures taken in Croudace Bay.

After a spate of bull shark sightings in the lake, it’s now believed the greatest predator in the ocean is living in the waterway’s diverse marine habitat.

Sightings of great whites in the lake have been known, but the photos appear to be proof.

The equivalent of 18,704 tons of live bluefin tuna, a protected species subjected to fishing quotas, were traded via Panama between 2000 and 2010, without being reported to the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT) – the international body managing the fishery, reported on Wednesday the World Wildlife Fund.

Quick and Fast Facts • The Great Barrier Reef is the largest structure built by living organisms on the Earth today. • The Great Barrier Reef region is the world’s largest group of coral reefs. • There are three main types of reefs found on the Great Barrier Reef: Ribbon, Platform, and Fringing reefs. • Tiny masses of coral polyps are responsible for building coral reefs. • Coral Reefs make up 6% of the entire Great Barrier Reef Marine Park by Area. • Reefs are masses of limestone made from skeletons of millions upon millions of tiny marine animals and plants. • Main threats to coral reefs include human activities, coral bleaching and crown-of-thorn starfish outbreaks. The Continental Shelf provides the platform from which the reefs of the Great Barrier Reef develop. Humans are the main threat to coral reefs. The Great Barrier Reefs makes up 6% of all the reefs. It is the largest Stucture built by living organisms on earth today.
