A rare type of jellyfish may have gone on a stinging spree at a Laguna Beach, Calif., beach.
A number of Fourth of July swimmers came ashore with stings all over their bodies and dark... membranes latched onto them, according to the Orange County Register.
The dark color of the membranes indicated that the creatures might be rare black jellyfish, according to the Associated Press.
The species was identified in 1999 and only recently appeared in Southern California, the AP reported. Their tentacles can grow to up to 30 feet long.

The Houston, Texas-based Talos said the gas is coming from a well that it was in the process of abandoning. The leak happened while it was trying to permanently plug the well.

Gertrude Ederle---- In 1926, she became the first woman to swim across the English Channel. Her successful Channel swim - began approximately at Cape Gris-Nez in France at 07:08 on the morning of August 6, 1926. She came ashore at Kingsdown, Kent, England 14 hours and 39 minutes later. Her record stood until Florence Chadwick swam the channel in 1950 in 13 hours and 20 minutes.
Ederle had poor hearing since childhood due to measles, and by the 1940s she was almost completely deaf. Aside from her time in Vaudeville, Trudy taught swimming to deaf children. She never married and died on November 30, 2003 in Wyckoff, New Jersey, at the age of 98.
