NOAA  Ship Oscar Elton Sette arrived back  in its homeport of Honolulu on Saturday after a month in Papahānaumokuākea  Marine National Monument. The team of 17 scientists collected nearly 50 metric  tons of marine debris, which threatens monk seals, sea turtles and other marine  life in the coral reef ecosystem, in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands (NWHI). NOAA  has conducted annual removal missions of marine debris in the NWHI since 1996  as part of a coral restoration effort.

Since 2001, planners at NASA’s Extreme Environment Mission Operations (NEEMO) program have been sending people to live in Aquarius, an underwater laboratory three and a half miles south of Key Largo, Florida. Last month, during NEEMO’s 16th mission, three astronauts lived there for 12 days, testing strategies for future asteroid expeditions, evaluating the best spacewalking techniques, and planning how to sample rocks and soil.

A few months ago, my wife Debbie and I dove in Akumal, Mexico. We had fabulous weather, great viz, and easy diving. On all but one of our five dive days at least one lion fish hunter was on the boat for the earliest dive. Akumal is, like much of the Caribbean, under invasion from these beautiful but voracious animals. In Akumal there is an organized effort to eradicate lion fish, and compared to our observations of this invasive species when we dove there a year earlier, the campaign is working.
