Diving and Altitude

Diving and Altitude | All about water, the oceans, environmental issues | Scoop.it

Standard scuba knowledge tells us not to dive and fly within 24 hours, and in fact the advice could be expanded to include avoiding diving and going into the mountains within 24 hours as well. And diving in the mountains, perhaps in a mountain lake, requires a separate certification course entirely. But why? The answer has to do with relative compression, which occurs when the base pressure to which we compare our depth while diving is something other than 1 bar or atmosphere.

Scientists use unmanned aerial vehicle to study gray whales from above

Scientists use unmanned aerial vehicle to study gray whales from above | All about water, the oceans, environmental issues | Scoop.it
NOAA Fisheries scientists are using an unmanned aerial vehicle to take very precise overhead images of migrating gray whale mothers and calves. 'We can't put a gray whale on a scale, but we can use aerial images to analyze their body condition -- basically, how fat or skinny they are,' said NOAA Fisheries scientist John Durban. This research will help scientists understand how environmental conditions control the reproductive success of individual whales and ultimately of the population.

Savannah Rains's curator insight, May 27, 2:28 AM

While this is not a lengthy scoop it really shows its viewers the harsh truth about the environment and what we are doing to it. Sadly the "mystery" probably has something to do with us humans and our direct impact on the planet, such as oil and chemical spills. The environment is something that has many problems, but should be saved if we want a place to live.

Some fish learn to avoid fishing gear, others don't.

Some fish learn to avoid fishing gear, others don't. | All about water, the oceans, environmental issues | Scoop.it
In many cases stock assessment is based on fishery-dependent data generated from fish markets or creel surveys. The assumption is: the lower the catches in a certain unit of time, the smaller the stock of fish should be. However German researchers have just shown that some fish species show enhanced gear-avoidance behaviour in regions with high angling intensity compared to fish exposed to low levels of exploitation near marine protected areas. The consequence is the impression that there are less fish in the sea, which does not necessarily agree with underwater reality.
