Ithaa Undersea Restaurant, Maldives
The vast majority of restaurants are above sea level, but Ithaa isn’t among them, what with it being five metres beneath the surface of the Indian Ocean and all. The world’s first undersea restaurant became the 11th eatery in the sprawling Conrad Maldives Rangali Island resort in 2005, allowing up to 14 guests to dine beneath a transparent acrylic dome.
The dining room is reached via a spiral staircase in a thatched pavilion at the end of a jetty, and features a six-course fixed menu that includes delicacies like Malossol imperial caviar, Maldivian lobster carpaccio and yellowtail kingfish. In short, seafood lovers won’t be disappointed — unless they were hoping to simply point toward the ceiling and exclaim, “I’ll have one of those!”
