The death toll has reached nine after residents from the eastern Madagascar village of Mahasoa Ampasimbe Manatsatrana ate shark caught by traditional fishermen last week.

Another 110 remain admitted in hospital with medics reporting an acute lack of facilities, while doctors from the capital were dispatched to the area.

The sick complained of a numbing of nerves believed to be from the absorption of toxins contained in the shark flesh.

Many then became paralysed, losing complete control of their bodies, with delirium also reported.

Authorities are still waiting for results from a laboratory analysis ordered on the meat.

The government's Population and Public Health ministers on Thursday visited the affected community.

Authorities have also issued a notice banning the consumption of seafood--including shark and tuna--in reaction to the tragedy.

A list of marine fishes that should not be consumed during the hot season (October-April) has been published by the fishing ministry.

Poisoning from seafood is common on the island nation. Two years ago 20 people died and another 130 were admitted in south western Madagascar.

The source is thought to be the natural changes that happen to seaweed, which is food for the smaller fish species.

Toxins ~~

This results in the production of harmful toxins which are harmless to the fish, but extremely harmful for humans.

The smaller fish are then consumed by bigger ones and transmitted to humans.

Such scientific evidence has always been published in the country for decades, but the intense election campaigns over the last few months have made everyone less careful this year.

The economic downturn on the island is also blamed.

"Mahasoa’s residents rushed into the market to buy the caught 100-kilo shark sold at Ar2,000 ($0.9) a kilo," local journalist Kami Channe said.

Seafood and other meats are today a luxury for many Malagasy households.

Nearly 92 per cent of the population is poor, according to the World Bank.
