What’s the most frequent diving injury? Decompression illness, right?

No, it’s ear injuries. The most common injury divers experience is some form of barotrauma to the ear. Barotrauma means injury from pressure (baro = pressure + trauma = injury).

There are plenty of fascinating stories and characters to be found in ocean lore. We can recall, for example, the legend of the Flying Dutchman, doomed to sail the seas forever. While we’ve seen the incarnation of this particular legend in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series, it’s not the only legend embedded in

The Amazon is being relentlessly torn down, just as scientists have discovered 381 new species in it

The Amazon is being relentlessly torn down, just as scientists have discovered 381 new species in it | All about water, the oceans, environmental issues | Scoop.it
A new species is being discovered in the Amazon every two days from fire-tailed titi monkeys and yellow-moustached lizards to pink river dolphins and honeycomb-patterned stingrays, according to a new report. Conservation group World Wildlife Fund, who wrote the report along with Brazil’s Mamiraua Institute, said the astonishing rate of new finds showed scientists had still only scratched the surface of all the “incredible species” that live there.

Keith Ramos's curator insight, September 3, 8:18 PM
Though the dangers of deforestation have occurred over a period of time, it is now evident that it's effect is vast in various environments. This article specifies and focuses primarily on one. being the Amazonian jungle. As we all are aware of, this jungle withholds a myriad of different species and some that have yet to be discovered. In the last years about 400 new species were discovered from aquatic to land animals. The World Wildlife Fund has taken action to get local governments in the region to take a step forward and aid in preserving this habitat. Nearly a third of all rainforests on our planet belong to the Amazon, and animals in decline are rapidly escalating. The current rate of extinction is an estimated 1,000-10,000 times more than that of a natural rate due to human activities such as deforestation. The WWF will continue taking charge, I strongly believe that this is necessary in order to maintain the balance.
Alistair Economakis's curator insight, September 8, 2:45 PM

It is great to see that we are still finding new marine life. We have only just scratched the surface!
