A Wetsuit Diver’s Guide To Maintaining Body Heat

A Wetsuit Diver’s Guide To Maintaining Body Heat | All about water, the oceans, environmental issues | Scoop.it

Being cold is usually unpleasant, but when it comes to diving, being cold can be dangerous, too. When you become chilled underwater, you lose functionality, strength, and the ability to concentrate on anything other than your own discomfort. In extreme cases, being cold can lead to hypothermia, which is a harmful drop in body temperature to below 95 Fahrenheit (35 C). It can lead to impaired judgment, uncontrollable shivering and, in extreme cases, unconsciousness and death. In addition, loss of body heat is associated with an increased risk of decompression sickness, because when you’re cold, your body constricts its blood vessels in an attempt to conserve heat. In a diving scenario, this means blood off-gasses nitrogen slower than your dive computer or RDP anticipates.

Check Me Out!

Check Me Out! | All about water, the oceans, environmental issues | Scoop.it

When diving with a new dive operator, there’s a good chance you’ll be required to do a checkout dive. It’ll be the first dive of your stay, in an easy location, usually fairly confined, in reasonably shallow water, and a guide or instructor will accompany you. Checkout dives allow operators to assess your skills and experience level in relation to the requirements of local sites, which will help them guide you to dive sites that will fit your abilities, making your dives safer and more enjoyable.

Diving and Altitude

Diving and Altitude | All about water, the oceans, environmental issues | Scoop.it

Standard scuba knowledge tells us not to dive and fly within 24 hours, and in fact the advice could be expanded to include avoiding diving and going into the mountains within 24 hours as well. And diving in the mountains, perhaps in a mountain lake, requires a separate certification course entirely. But why? The answer has to do with relative compression, which occurs when the base pressure to which we compare our depth while diving is something other than 1 bar or atmosphere.
